Yorkie Ears?
 
Bare with me, I have never owned a Yorkie before but I have taken note that adult Yorkies have pointed ears that stand straight up. Darla, being a puppy, has floppy ears at the moment. I read online about their ears standing up and got mixed information. Some things I read stated that their ears need to be taped to get them to stand up. Other things I read stated that they will just stand up naturally on their own and don't require much more than massaging to develop the muscle and get them to naturally stand up on their own. Of course the two contradict one another so I'd like to get the ladies of this board's opinion. I don't want to have to tape her little baby ears if I don't have to.

Some stand on their own and some never stand. We had to tape Laddy's for 2 weeks to get them to stand, plus shave the top third of his ears. Kyra's were standing the first time we saw her at 7 weeks.

How old is Darla? There are many things that can cause the ears to flop, namely teething. Taping might or might not help. Same with massage. Tipping the ears (trimming hair 1/3 to 2/3 of the way down the flap) may help, taking the weight of hair off of the ears.

Some Yorkies' ears never stand up. Although it is not the standard, they are still extra cute. :)

I prefer not to say how old she is out of fear of being flamed but I can say she's definitely teething so that's probably why they're floppy. I read that they will stand up typically between 3-6 months. She's younger than 3 months. I don't think I need to start doing anything yet. I mostly just posted the thread for future reference so I don't miss a window of opportunity or something and then never be able to get her ears to stand. Rather her ears stand or not I won't love her any less but if there's something I can do to help then I will do what I can for my little sweetheart.


Edit: not flamed by you just by anyone who sees it and feels the need to say "well she's too young and you shouldn't even have her yet". I just don't want to start any arguments if I get offended. I'm here for my little one and to make new friends. :-)

Trim the ear hair, my boy ears were standing at 10wks and continued to stand up all through his teething as well. His breeder kept his ears trimmed until the time I brought him home at 12wks, and I continue to do the same.

No worries! It isn't the end of the world. People are just genuinely concerned when really young ones come home, too tiny -- and if the person expects the little babe to perfectly potty and behavior trained in a day.

I don't know if there is a perfect window of time for taping. Might be something to post again in the breeders section. They probably know best.

I'll definitely give the ear hair trimming a shot and see if that helps. I used to groom three Shih Tzu so I should have no problem with trimming the ear hair on my own. Thanks for the tips ladies. :)

That's understandable. I'm lucky in that respect I suppose because I work from home for my fiance's company she is constantly in my arms and is taken outside every hour. We've had one accident and that was my fault. This morning when I first woke up I really had to go to the bathroom myself so I brought Darla in with me and put her on one of our bath rugs and apparently she had to really go too. Oh well, aside from that she's doing wonderful with pottying outside. I just try to consistently take her out and go crazy praising her when she pottys outside. :aimeeyork

:thumbup::thumbup: Keep up the praising. My boys are 4 and 5 and I still throw parties for good potties. :D

You have a great advantage with your small dog grooming experience.

I work from home too, but for me it was a good thing that my first Yorkie was 13 weeks and a big boy when I brought him home. Even at that age, a sturdy 3 pounds, and the breeder did a lot of the foundation work, I was totally overwhelmed. LOL He was my first dog in a very long time, and my first small dog. I wimped out on my second Yorkie and chose an 8 month old, Max's full brother from a different litter. :D

:thumbup: The picture I have of Max at 10 weeks from the breeder shows his ears standing. His never went down through the teething process.
