How to stop the constant barking We have 2 yorkie schnauzer mix puppies that are 6 months old. The constant barking is driving me crazy. They bark at everything and nothing. I've tried telling them to quiet to giving them a little swat and anything else I can think of. Nothing works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! |
Forget the swatting! Putting aside the moral reasons not to swat, physical action will only hype them up and they will never learn. I admit, this is something I still struggle with my boys on when the doorbell rings, in the car, and certain triggers on our walks. However, they do not yap randomly. 1. How much exercise do they get? A dog with pent up energy is much more likely to bark. A daily routine of activities helps calm the dog. My boys know when to expect certain things like meals or short play sessions, and their favorite part of the day -- a big outing with a long walk. 2. Try pennies in a can. If they are immune to this, try other noise makers to see what gets their attention. There is a dog behavior product, can't think of the name, that is nothing more than a can of compressed air. Great tips/suggestions, Kristin! We used the pennies in a can for potty training and it worked well. Perhaps it can help with the barking. |
Pet Corrector Luckily my yorkie/maltese mix does not bark too much, but she would bark when I walked away from her into another room that was blocked off or when I had to put her in her crate to take a shower in the morning. I found a product called Pet Corrector from Petco. It is simply compressed air in a can that makes a hissing noise when sprayed. When I walked out of the room and she started barking I would turn around (can in hand b/c I knew she would bark), spray the air (not at her), and say "Lexi quiet". She jumped back from the sound and was immediately quiet. Only had to do this a couple times and now she no longer barks when I walk away or I can simply say quiet if she barks at something and she will stop. |
Teach a "No" command and then add "quiet". I always teach a "No" command early, this is the only command that I might raise my voice with. Its best to get the dog to do or stop doing the action well first, then ad the command word and hand signal. Always train Voice and Hand signal as this will come in handy many times and if dog should go deaf with age they will still understand 100% Done properly a "No" command should freeze the dogs action and can help with training other commands |
they get plenty of exercise. we have a fenced yard and they are put out 4-5 times a day to just run and play. both are extremely stubborn and will quiet when i raise my voice and yell "quiet" but both immediately start again. I will try the pennies in a can today and see if that helps. Thanks you! |
