Advice on a climbing Yorkie pup I've got a 9 week old puppy that I've had for a week now. We got her an 18in exercise pen for her to be in while we are away, primarily because she started peeing in her crate the last few days. I know she needs to go a lot and doesn't have the capacity to hold it yet so I am planning to reintroduce the crate when she's about 12 weeks so that she can hold it a bit more. With the current set up she has a soft bed, pee pad, toys and bowls. Anyway, she has managed to climb out and it kills me because she hangs on and then jostles her little feet up to the next rung to get out. I've started teaching her down by removing her and saying the word "Down" and giving her treats when she does this herself, but once she gets down she just runs back up to the gate to do it again. We've even put her in a clear open plastic storage bin with no rungs on the side and she jumps and gets out. I'm baffled by this. Any ideas on what I can do to train her to stay in the pen or stop climbing? Either that or recommendations of a containment system that she won't figure out? Thanks so much! |
Congratulations on your new puppy! You have a special one with her climbing abilities. Since this is not safe, especially when you cannot be there to supervise, I would either put a top on the xpen, or buy a crate large enough to accommodate a piddle pad on one end and bed on the other. The latter might confuse her if you switch to crate training later and she doesn't have the pad -- if your goal is strict outdoor training. |
Hi and WELCOME! What if you line the excercise pen w/ cardboard or something else that is solid? Otherwise, I think you'll have to find a different kind of x-pen to keep her safe. I used this one: Purchase the IRIS 4 Panel Pet Pen at Walmart.com. Save money. Live better. |
Thank you so much for the suggestions. They are really helpful. For now, I've stopped using the pen she can climb out of unless we are home to watch her. So she's just roaming free and I'm cleaning up after her when I get back home. She's going about 80% on her pad. I do have a big crate but she would go potty in it if left alone for even 30 minutes and I do want to crate train. We're going to get a doggy door soon. So I don't want to reinforce that. That pen looks awesome and it has a door which will be helpful. I'll likely go for that one when I get paid next. |
I know they make covers for some of the expens. I have the iris and the make a cover for it |
As you have a climber, I wouldn't recommend the Iris playpen. My ZoE was a climber as a puppy and easily scaled the walls of the Iris. I had it for two days and it ended up stored in the basement. Look at a picture of it. The horizontal bars are evenly spaced and make a perfect ladder for a climbing pup...very bad design! |
