Ask what? When looking for a groomer, what questions should be addressed? |
I'd say education, years of experience, experience with Yokies, references. |
It's practically impossible to decide whether or not to trust this stranger(the potential groomer) with your babies during a 15 minute chat at the front of the salon. I think groomers should have little puppy cams so you can see them while they are being groomed, but I don't really see that happening. :( |
I do all my grooming bc I believe it's the only way to be 100% sure your babies are safe. However, I'd want to know a few things from a groomer: -Have any dogs died in this salon's care, if so, under what circumstances? -Do they use blow drying boxes? (if yes, are you comfortable w/ that???) -What safety measures are in place? -Experience w/ small dogs? -Are groomers in areas that are unsupervised by other groomers? I don't know what else... |

We don't have our pup yet but went by a groomers that wife knew the owner of. We just went in and looked around, the owner was not there but two employees were working on dogs. I liked the set up behind the counter, they used cool air cage dryers and hand finished. The big thing I did not like was all the holding cages/crates were in front in the customer area on both sides so people coming in and their dogs could do whatever they wanted to your pup. The cages could not be seen by employees until they stopped work and came to counter. If we decide on this groomer we will insist our dog be kept behind counter. Don't like exposing our dogs to unknown people/dogs for health and other reasons |

Holding area, Petsmart, Noose set up and use (is it double or single, table size), do they check shots up to date. I try to drop in and observe, if they ask, just checking prices, you can see a lot by what they do with dog they are working on when they talk to you and watch the dog when they re-approach them. Tools, neatness, overall interaction and rep, ask friends. I size up people pretty good so I go by gut instinct too. Also your dog will tell you, now the first few times its difficult and a good groomer will not do major work. If they do that would be a flag, yes you do what a customer wants but the first few times you explain the puppies stress levels. You want the puppy to enjoy the trip to the beauty parlor, same goes for Vet. |
I also do the grooming for my pups myself because I would not trust stranger to groom my babies. Things that would automatically disqualify a groomer for me: -Cage dryers -If the dogs are kept loose -If they want me to drop my pup off and leave them all day -If they wouldn't allow me to stay and watch. |
