Chiquis 1 Attachment(s) Hi! Let me introduce our adorable Chiquis. She's about 10 months old, from a shelter, and we've had her about 2 months. I had no idea what to expect because my parents had only had big dogs that lived outside. She provides constant companionship and laughter and affection. In the picture Chiquis just swiped a french fry I had left for the birds. I boil chicken thighs and brown rice with some veggies and chop that up for her food. She gets dry food, but prefers her home-cooked meals and anything she can grab from the birds. Although she is mainly in the house, I do feed her outside and she does her business outside. She is fun to watch in the garden, though, because she digs holes and runs and goes exploring and tugs at vines. I also give her beef or pork bones (never chicken) and she acts like a dog on a mission with them; they must be buried, but she usually digs them up again right away. Although I've heard the pros and cons about bones, she really enjoys them and I let her chew awhile and then throw them away so she doesn't really eat much. More later... Chiquis' Mom |

Welcome aboard! Rescued dogs are among the most loyal you can ever own and so far it seems like you're giving her a great life. Just make sure she can't escape through a hole in your garden or front porch. A lot of people seem to understimate the jumping and curious nature of yorkies, since they ignore that this breed was created to hunt mice and rats, so they will try to get through any holes no matter if it seems too small for them. This is why training them to "stop" is so important. :) |
Gated yard now Thanks for the advice! We had to have 2 fairly high gates made to keep her safe. First we piled up boxes and made a barrier, but she found a way out. That was the day we had left for the hospital and the cleaning lady found her in the middle of the block. After that we were really scared and made sure she couldn't get out and nothing could get into the yard, either. She really doesn't seem tempted to leave if we're home, but you never know. We would only leave her in the yard if we're not home if we won't be gone too long and the weather is nice. Today when we went out we had to lock her in the bathroom because it was rainy. I worry about leaving her to have the run of the whole house because there are electric cords and stuff that she could get into. |

When we're sleeping, she is. I get up a lot during the night, so I can tell. She sleeps in a little bed that I can see. I did "crate" her by putting a laundry basket over her for the first 9 nights. Then I stopped and I saw she didn't go wandering off and didn't have any accidents (then). She will sometimes bark at night if she's heard something close to the house and jump up but then we're awake too and she comes back to bed. She is a great watch dog. She seems to like her little bed. I put another just like it in the study because she didn't like to be on my lap on the swivel chair, so often she is right beside me while I'm on the computer. She likes to be where the action is--either with my husband and me or in the kitchen if someone else is cooking or outside if someone is sweeping. She seems to be keeping tabs on the whole household. I'll look into some kind of crate for the potty training though. I don't think it will be too hard because she seems to go immediately after eating but she isn't trained, she's just outside at the right time, usually. |
