Flowers that Yorkies don't like
 
Yup..I am looking for flowers that I can plant around the base of our lilac and a red leaf maple that will discourage our little guy from digging in the wonderful dirt and burying things. We have used landscape stones to form a circle around the plants thinking he wouldn't jump up there and dig in it.....lol....I know ..what was I thinking. I know that deer don't like marigolds because of there smell which is rather obnoxious I must admit.........suggestions please!!:confused:

Good question....what about ornamental grasses or yucca type plants? Just make sure you don't use plants that are toxic to dogs like sago palms!

Not enough room in the space for those ......have them out front though in landscape with river rock. Course he is not allowed out there without a leash. Afterall the world is his and he has to see and go everywhere...grin

I purchased 28 inch high green plastic fence, cut it down the middle making it 14 inches. Used it to in-circle flower bed around my trees. I also have raised garden beds, I ran a strip of this fencing in front of them, I use tomato stakes (cut 18 inches high) to secure to ground. Same with the flowers around the trees. At that time I had a big yorkie, 17 lbs, she was forever digging and bury "stuff", (usually her rope toys), soft yummy earth was wonderful for burying "stuff", the 14 inch high fencing kept her out. My new lil adopted guy has been in the back yard the few days, checking it out. He's smaller, appox 11 lbs, has shorter legs then my 17 lb one. No flowers yet, but I don't think I'll have a problem with him, besides when he's out, I am with him watching him. He's not use to running free,don't know what he may try, so I watch his every move.

Yes, please research toxic plants before planting anything.


I don't know about dogs, but I do know that Marigolds are suppose to discourage bunnies from entering your garden.

@ matese you must have missed the part of my question where I said that we had landscape stone around them which he jumps up on now so no adding anything else except perhaps the marigolds. Our raised beds we covered with chicken wire when we put the garden to bed in the fall. We now await the fence guy to run a fence between the raised beds and the fire pit. Refuse to try to raise a garden and keep him out of it....grin. I am gone during the day at work and hubby ...well lets be honest he doesn't watch his every move. The entire back yard is fenced and he has a pet door so he can have sorta free run. No bulbs and no lilys for the backyard so think that marigolds are a starting point to at least try!

After reading your post I just posted this thread; maybe you can find something that would discourage him from digging. Plus its very helpful to know just in case you were to ever come across something you don't recognize.

Yes I saw you had landscaping stone, good stepping stones for mischievous lil pup. The fencing I used is thin, could be placed behind the stone, would have to be higher then the 14 inches I needed. Yes go with the marigolds.

I am going to try the marigolds and will post back if it helps! May even plant them if the rain and wind stops .....

I live in NE Pa. it is suggested not to plant delicate plants /flowers until after May 15th when chance of frost is over. I usually plant around May 10, I have a small green house, I buy end of April, put in green house, plant on or around May 10th, it kills me to have to wait so long lol. Hope you can plant your marigolds soon.

Hey me too! :) neat to see more Oregonians on here. The tulips are just now blooming in the gorge though, it almost a seems to have its own micro climate sometimes. Our well established daffodils have had there day for a good bit now but some of the younger ones have yet even to bloom, can you believe it?!

Just planted a gorgeous little section of red and white perinneals- although they are in an area that is not fenced so miss lilah will not be there unleashed, I had better check the toxic plants list for a refresher course! We are doing a lot I landscaping this year (I hope). Good luck with your digging delimma!
