Itchy Eyes...
 

Yumi seems to be having more trouble with her eyes lately than she has. Shes scratching at her face. At 1st I wasn't sure if she was scratching at her eyes or her ears. She went to the vet and they found a small scratch on one of her eyes. He said it looked like something that might happen just playing with another little dog, and he thought that was all that was bothering her. Teddy had spent a couple days with us so that made sense to me. He gave her some eye drops we put in twice a day.

That was sat. Shes still scratching at her face. We can't decide is its getting better or not. Luke says he think's it is, but I'm not sure. I'm beginning to wonder its not allergies. If the itching came before the scratch, she may have even scratched her own eye. Her eyes don't seem to be very runny, but are a tiny bit gooey she she wakes up. She doesn't seem to be sneezing or choking or snotty. Do allergies seem unlikely without noticeable nasal symptoms?

I'm a fairly anxious person in general. I thought I would try to give it a week before we go back, but it's driving me insane. In the event it doesn't seem to be getting better, what options are out there for allergies in dogs especially eye allergies? I know benadryl is ok, but wouldn't think it would be good long term because of the drowsiness. I don't know anything about prescription options.

tI dont know what is causing it but your going to have to put a cone on hhher if you cant get her to stop the scratching of the eye. That scratch she has is a scratch on the cornea. Chachi has scratched his out playing so many times he has permanent cloudiness to his eye and eye sight problems

My vet does a recheck after 3 days to make sure the meds are working.

She does have a cone she wears when I can't watch her. the rest of the time I tell her no when she reaches for her face and she stops. She thinks I'm insane but she still listens...

So you think after 4 days it should be enough better I would be sure? Like I said I'm pretty anxious in general so I'm not sure if I should trust myself or my husband. He seems certain shes doing better.

A superficial/shallow corneal scratch usually heals quickly, sometimes overnight, but it can take a full week for the eye to be completely normal. The eye drops cause a bit of a burning sensation when they are put in, so that might make her want to scratch.

As Chachi suggested, keep the cone on her.

Also, examine her eyes closely in bright light for any sign of hair that may be poking her eye. I discovered that was the main cause of Max's problems -- hair getting in the eye. It was very difficult to detect because he gets it wrapped into the corner and then up under the lid, but I became an expert at finding it.

ok thanks. I don't see any hair. I had checked before to see if it looked like any was poking her because we were working of growing her nose back out from where the groomer shaved it, but I wasn't looking on her eyes so much since it wasn't shaved.

I think maybe luke is right watching her this afternoon it still seems to be bothering her occasionally, but not as much I'll probably take her back sat so he can look at it anyway, but I think it is getting better. I'm pretty sure its a small scratch I haven't been able to see it, even the 1st time i put the drops in. I'm just glad they heal fast she hates normal collars you can imagine what she think of the cone

Happy to hear she is doing better. The vet should do another eye stain within a week anyway, just to make sure the scratch has healed.

If she continues to watch to scratch her face or rub her face into bedding or the floor, look for stray hairs or consider allergies as you and Wylie's Mom mentioned.

I tried to get on earlier but I think the site was down. I got an email with a message asking about paw licking and chewing, but the message doesn't seem to be here now. I've seen her chewing her leg above her paws a couple times but not the paws specifically. Its not constant, or really frequent so I didn't really think anything about it. She seems even better today.

Yes, allergies definitely happen without any nasal symptoms. In dogs, the cardinal sign of allergies is paw licking/chewing...is that happening? Also, itching and eye issues can be present.

I've seen her chewing her leg above her paws a couple times but not the paws specifically. She goes back to the vet tomorrow.
