My baby is not drinking water
 
Hi everyone, new to YT, I have a 5 y/o yorkie, all of a sudden she is refusing to drink water. She doesn't appear to be sick, playful, eating food and has been urinating often. She is fed canned dog food, I know she gets some fluid from her food, but her urinating seems to be more then her intake of food. I offer her water from a tsp, she will "sometimes" lap it up. This started yesterday. Before I call my vet, I thought I may get some advise from members on how can I get her to start drinking. Thanks for any suggestions.

welcome to YT sorry it has to be under these circumstances, I have no advise for you, I am sure other members will soon give suggestions. Good luck with your lil furbaby.

Hi and Welcome to YT!

If her gums are moist, then she is not dehydrated. How much does she weigh? Are you sure she's not sneaking drinks? With weather changes, she may be adjusting...

gums seem moist, the truth is, that's the first time ever I touched a dogs gums and I have had 6 dogs. Weight is 10 lbs, she is not sneaking drinks. where I am, she's there, when I don't see her I look to see where she is & what she's doing. What worries me is, she is urinating numerious times a day, not drinking water and all that urinating!!!! she's putting out more then she's taking in.

If she is peeing as usually then I don't think there is any cause for concern. As you said she is eating canned food so there is extra water there. If you are really concerned about her intake of fluids you could always add a little water to her food. If you really truly think there is concern then of course give your vet a call and bring her in for a quick look over for piece of mind.

I will add water to the food, she'll lap up the water I give her from the spoon. My vet says I am an "over concerned mom" So I am trying to do what I can before making the call and seeing vet. When my dog does not act herself, I will watch carefully for a while, if I see there is something not right I take to vet. Her not drinking water is a cause for concern to me. I will add some water to the food. Thank you. I have been seeing postings about gum color, what color pink should they be, I just saw a posting white gums is a danger signal. It's hard to get her mouth open, I have to PRY it open, I hate forcing her. So checking gums is something I have never done until a little while ago, another member asked if the gums were moist. They seemed to be, but I don't know how moist they should be if she was acting normal.

To check her gums, just lift the outer lip up, like they do when they growl or show their teeth. No need to pry open her mouth. You would feel the stickie-ness, like glue. Medium pink is good. Moist gums your finger will slide smoothly over them, and your finger may feel a bit moist, once removed.

ok, was not sticky, and her gums were med pink. I will add the water to her food as the other member sugested. Thank you for your help. I guess I will continue giving her spoons of water and checking her gums until she starts to drink on her own.

Is she peeing on a potty pad so that you can check amount, color & odor? Do you know if she is really peeing or just squatting?

I'd also place two bowls of water out, one in the same room and one for her. Measure the amounts in each, one she has access to and the other she can't access. At the end of the day, measure the amounts left in each bowl. Subtract the difference of the bowl she can't access from the bowl she can access, that will be the amount she drank taking into account any that evaporated.

If she's peeing more often, she may have a Urinary Tract Infection. Are you able to tell the amount she's peeing or are you judging by the time she spends trying to pee?

she's house broken, goes outside in yard, I am always with her, oh, she's peeing all right, and not just a drop or 2, she's makes a nice pee-pee, I see the wet ground.

I have been measuring, 1 cup of water, when I give fresh water I measure what is in the bowl, it's the same amount I put in, not much evaportes I change 4 / 5 times a day. lol she's doesn't "try" to pee, she goes out and squats right away, a nice pee-pee, not a couple of drops. She's not peeing more then she normally does, since she's not drinking where is all the pee comng from, I didn't think canned food had tht much liquid in it. She is peeing out more then she is taking in, that's my concern. And what she takes from the spoon amounts to maybe a table spoon. I am always offering her water from the spoon, she laps it up or just takes 1 or 2 little laps, so maybe all the laps equal 2 tablespoons a day.

If you've turned your heat down or off with it being so nice last week, that would be enough to cause her to be drinking a bit less, as a heated environment is less humid and a lot drier than an unheated one. Now today, with heat back on, maybe she'll increase her intake! Mine go through seasonal changes in diet and water consumption 3-4 times a year... and I always freak out about it first, till I realize they're all doing it, lol. It's warmer, or cooler, they're more or less active, etc...

Canned food is about 78% water (check the can, it should say). Can you tell what color her urine is? Light to clear could mean she's getting too much water. Very dark, not enough or something else could be going on. Smelly urine could also indicate a problem. I know that if she's not thirsty, she won't drink on her own. By that, I mean sometimes it's good to let the body take over by allowing her to get to the point where she begins to feel thirsty and see how her intake is that way. Also she won't void everything she eats and drinks in one day. As long as she's staying hydrated, I would just keep an eye on her.

That's good..at least you know she's getting some water.. Can you possibly get a urine sample? IDk..maybe put a paper cup under her teetee when she pees? Sounds crazy but unless you take her in I would think it would be hard to tell if the color is on the clear side and there is no odor. Mine is on pee pads so I would know right away. Their urine and poop sometimes are the 1st indication of a problem. I'm no vet but it's worth checking.
