Collars and Clothes! My little Koda won't let me put a collar on him, when I finally got one on him he was so uncomfortable he almost flipped over scratching at it! Is this normal? Do I need to just put it on and leave it? Also I attempted to put a shirt on him and he totally was not having it! When is the right time/age to start putting clothes on your puppy to get them used to it? And I am not planning in dressing him up all the time or anything but the occasional shirt is a definite possibility! |
Make sure it's a comfortable collar and not one that's way to thick. The little pals collars are great. I only buy ones that are 3/8" anything else is to thick for my girl. It can take a long time for them to get used to it. When your around I would put it on and then try distracting him by playing and you can even use some treats to keep him interested. Remember never to hook the leash to the collar the collar should only be used for id tags. Use a harness for anytime he is going to be on the leash. |
Put the collar or shirt on him, give him a treat, praise him, and take him to do something fun (go for a walk, play, go for a car ride, etc). The idea is to get him to associate it with good things and to distract him. It's best to start getting them used to things as soon as possible. |
My Tibbe wears a collar or harness full-time so he's always got his ID tag on him. I only made him wear the collar/harness for a short time at first, would take it off, scratch his neck and back all over, give him a nice treat and let him out in the back to run off his tensions from having it on. Slowly, over a week or so, I gradually increased the time he wore it until he totally stopped being aware of it but he always got the scratching, treat and outside session after it came off as a reward for having it on while he was still adjusting to it. Now he accepts either with aplomb and never seems to notice either is on him after an initial scratch or two. He gets a treat or a pat/praise when I put them on at first. I put his collar on him, pull his neck skin/hair up and over it so it's not riding up high over his throat and falls into its natural place or make sure his harness isn't too tight/loose, rubbing or riding sideways or high before putting him down. And treat/pat or praise. But he hates clothes, scratches at them like a madman, so I don't intend to force him to wear them and he's almost never in really freezing, dangerous weather outside and it's warm/cool enough inside to keep him comfortable w/out clothing. I have put his coat/sweater on him to go potty when it was below 15 degrees here and taken it right back off when he got inside. |
Make sure you do this while he is still young. When I got Gunner I thought I had time to leash train him. I find out this spring (when the ground was actually showing) that I can't undo the clasp on his harness. Took him friday to our campground and he would not walk, potty, or anything on his leash. Train, train, train.... |

My baby is only 7 weeks and she loves clothes, I put on her collar and after a couple hours I think she forgot it was on. :) |
