First Grooming Questions Hello! My Ella will be 14 wks on Friday, she is in dire need of some grooming. Her hair is getting long and covering her eyes, and she could use an all over trim.;) She just received her last set of vaccines, so now I'm thinking of taking her to a groomer. What is your opinion on her age, do you think she's too young? And should I take her to like a PetsMart vs. a private groomer? I just don't feel comfortable leaving her for hours at a time.:( Any advice would be appreciated! |
I think I took Magnus to his first grooming after about 5-6 months. If you have friends with dogs, I'd say ask them for recommendations. Best thing to do is search for reviews for the location you're interested in. Perhaps if you mention your location, there might be other members on YT that lives around you and can recommend a good groomer. You mentioned not feeling comfortable leaving her for hours at a time. A lot of the YT member do the grooming at home for various reasons. Perhaps you would consider learning how to groom yourself? |

I agree you could consider grooming her yourself. There are videos under Yorkie grooming talk here in Yorkietalk that show you how you can cut her hair. Leroy is 5 months and I just groomed him this past weekend myself for the first time. I groomed him with a Wahl pet clipper and trimmer combo that I bought at target awhile back to trim the hair on his ears. I kept his hair on his head long and his body short, his legs I didn't do anything to except even them out with scissors since he doesn't have much hair on them. I got him used to the trimmer since he was about 2 months old by putting the trimmer next to his face turned on but without cutting anything for a few seconds, gave him a treat and little by little increased the time each day. Then when I felt he felt better having the trimmer near him, I started trimming his ears about every week or every other week. If you want to groom her yourself start with something simple and short timed and then progress from there so she doesn't get scared. |
I would wait two weeks after her last vaccines. I personally would go to a private groomer. Petco is a bit pricey and I don't like how they treat the dogs at Petsmart. Mine gets groomed at our vets office it's not perfect but it's pretty good and they know us and her very well there and she gets to stay in the same crate as my moms yorkie Sammy. When we just had Callie at every place we went we would get the express or zoom groom where they do her right when we bring her in and then call us right when she is done. Now that she has Sammy we drop them off together for about 3 or 4 hours. Make sure where ever you go that they don't use cage dryers those can cause bad burns. |
Try giving her the trim yourself that way you don't put her at risk for anything. It's not that difficult watch some videos on YouTube. Just cut around the eyes, do the skirt and where ever its getting long. |
Thank you everyone! I think I'll try to watch some videos and groom her myself. I'll have to get her use to clippers since she's never experienced it before. She gets squirmy just from getting her hair brushed! :) I live in Glendora, I've heard of a couple of good places, but still kind of nervous. Thank you all again for all your advice! |
I never thought I could groom myself but all it took was taking my girl one time and being worried sick about her the whole time she was gone to give me the courage to give it a try. You can do it! I can bath, trim and dry in 30-45 min. now. It is a great bonding time for you both. Just remember the coat will grow back! Good luck |

I took Oscar and Toby to a private groomers at around 4 months for a 'mini groom' (designed to tidy puppy up - bathe, brush, trim but also provide a positive experience to get them used to grooming). They have had another mini groom at the groomers recently at 5 months and along with myself brushing them EVERY SINGLE DAY they seem to really enjoy the grooming process (running to sit on my lap as soon as I pick their brush up! |
