A huge thanks from a first time yorkie owner Today I want to give a big hug and say thanks to all here who offer support, guidance and great advice to those of us who come here as new Yorkie parents. Yesterday I had a breeder come by who was considering rehoming a spayed female she had who was always being picked on by another female and fights were getting bad. She brought the female here to meet Wallee. First thing the female did was growl and try to nip Wallee. Nope. Not interested. I asked her who the instigator was and she said it used to be this one but now it is the other one. Hmmm.. Well, after having many pups come here and Wallee never showing any signs of aggression with any of them, I definitely am not prepared to take on someone else's bad behaviour dog. The lady sat here and Wallee lost interest and went to his bed. Her dog sat beside her on the couch and was even rolling over for belly rubs. (Still not impressed as that does not make her dog friendly). After a lot of discussions she agreed to take her back home and try to work it out between her two. She was so surprised to see how gentle Wallee was and shocked to hear that he is quite content to climb into his own bed on the floor of my room. Her comment, "he's almost too perfect." Well I wouldn't go so far as to say that as he can also be a spoiled whiney brat when he wants to play and he barks too much out back, I was proud and told her I really have to thank the people here on the forum for all their advice and help whenever I came. After babysitting little bratty diva dog for 2 weeks and seeing Wallee's great tollerance with her and then getting that compliment I am feeling proud of my "almost too perfect" boy.;) |
Oh, it sounds like little Wallee has grown up into a well-behaved little gentleman around visitors and a joy to have around the house. Not to say that any Yorkie is perfect - far too much attitude and feistiness as a breed for that - but he knows how to keep control of himself in the face of the great excitement of a visiting dog! Not all dogs are that in-control of themselves. I'm so happy to hear of Wallee's very good behavior. And add to that, he's super cute!!! |
All Yorkies are perfect... they're just in different stages of perfection! Wallee is a Good Boy! ETA: I wouldn't judge a dog's temperament in any breeding situation... different dynamics are in play. |
Kathy I like that quote. Different stages of perfection! Reminds me of this one: Be Patient God isn't finished with me yet. |

Just to clarify: When I said I wouldn't judge... I meant me... |

And now for my "silly question of the day" do any of you who breed expose your breeders to socializing outside your pack or is there just not enough hours in a day to manage to accomplish all this plus take care of everyone's needs? |
I don't breed, but I don't think it's healthy to be exposing the active breeders to anyone or any dogs outside the immediate household... too much risk of contamination. People aren't let into the breeding/whelping room(s) as they can bring contaminates in on their shoes. Especially puppy shoppers, who may travel to a few different breeders in the same day. |

Good breeding dogs are in the show ring environment till 2 years of age, earning their titles, then retired from showing and go on to breeding. So for those 2 years, their temperaments are constantly being evaluated, no one wants to pass on nastiness genes. Plus they're out and about with other dogs, strange people, crowds, etc. Any breeders that do not actively show their dogs, I guess there's really no guarantee there. In breeding situations, I've heard of dogs really getting out of control and doing harm to their own and others puppies... I think that may be more environmental stress, the moms not having appropriate privacy and such. I also think many people tend to not stop bad behavior when it is first seen, just hoping that it won't happen again kind of thing. I don't breed, but whenever mine fight, I am on them like white on rice, and would do the same if I was breeding them. If I couldn't break the habit, they would have separate rooms. |

Oops. My reply didn't post. I totally agree. I would do the same. Especially if I wad so attached to the one being picked on. |
Well it shows something about you that Wallee is "almost perfect" Also the Biewer breed is a little calmer then Yorkies in general. |
