Scared about rabies shot tomorrow.. does this shot hurt? Last time Chloe was at the vet she was 1.7 lbs at 4 months and she received her last shot, I left rabies for another time. Now she is turning 6 months on the 13th and I'm assuming she is around 2lbs or a little more than that. She's getting her rabies shot tomorrow but I'm a little scared because I heard this shot hurts? |

Lola has always been sensitive in the area she has received the shot and a few times she has thrown up. So my suggestion is to do what I do, have the vet give her an injection of Benadryl about 20-30 min before the shot. This has eliminated any adverse reactions. I also like to have shots done early hours before the office closes and then hang out at or around the vets office just in case of a problem. One time because of her vomiting I had to go rushing back and they said she was running a fever, so they had to treat her for that. Had I gone late in the day I would have had to go to the ER vet which is further and of course much more expensive. Also only get one type of shot at a time. Most likely your pup will be fine but I figure I want to take all the precautions possible. if you want the Benadryl call your vet today since you might need to arrive earlier than your appointment time. Good luck also don't get the shot then take the dog home and go right out, you should stick around just to see how she does, these little ones can be very sensitive and while most dogs have no problems I have read a lot on here about dogs that do |
Lola wasn't the slightest bit fazed by any of her shots. The vet said she'd be tired, nope, she came home and tortured me. Having her nails cut bothered her more. |
Levi never really had any trouble with his shots, even the LEPTO shot I was so worried about giving him. In fact, the thing that bugged him the most was actually when he got his microchip in. He itched at the spot for a whole day before finally calming down. |
Mine dont even flinch when getting the rabies shot |
I watch injection administration all the time. Intranasal seem to bother most more than anything. I'm sure vaccines are not exactly comfortable, but most don't mind. Now Cerenia injections...stings quite badly. |
Thank you everyone for the responses! I feel MUCH better knowing that in most cases the shot doesn't bother them. The vet always gives Chloe a cookie to eat so she never notices when she gets a shot. I just heard bad stories about the rabies shot so I thought it might hurt, etc. Big relief to know it's just like any other shot. |
Molly got her first rabies shot just a few weeks ago and she was fine afterwards. Good Luck! |
My dear vet always replaces the needles that come on the syringes with smaller ones. The kids never even flinch. |
Lilah (and my papillon Maggie) just got their first rabies shots and they didn't even flinch or make a sound. No issues after either. |
Neither of my boys have reacted to the injections, although they are happy to be back in my arms when it is over. Best wishes for your little one. |

I don't think it hurts any worse than the other vaccines. I know my previous vet used to give it in the muscle. I work for a vet now and we always give it SQ (under the skin). I haven't seen any noticeable difference in how they react to Rabies compared to other vaccines. |
I feel much less worried about tomorrow now lol, phew! Thank you everyone :) |
