Breeding Rights? The breeder I am buying my yorkie from offers the full breeding rights for $100 more. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. I have never bred dogs before and do not really plan on breeding my new pup (he is a male named, Koda) but I was wondering if it's beneficial to get the rights just in case. Also on that note, what are people's thoughts on neutering? The dogs I had growing up were never neutered, but I've heard that with yorkies if you are not breeding them you really should neuter them. Has anyone had any experience not neutering that can give me any insight into the pros and cons? Any advice would be appreciated! thanks! |
There are no advantages to having breeding rights unless you plan to breed |
Is your new puppy AKC registered? The breeding rights pretty much boil down to the owner wanting to breed and then registering the new litter of puppies with the AKC. Other than that how would the breeder real stop you from breeding a puppy they sold to you other than doing a spay/neuter prior to selling a puppy. For example, rescues will do this prior to adopting a rescue to ensure there is no way for that dog to reproduce. True show breeders will also not allow unaltered dogs from their breeding program either because they would want to control who is breeding and a dog with a good pedigree is very valuable. A show breeder is always looking for that perfect puppy to take into the ring so they are selective in which dogs they allow to breed. Lastly, there's no reason that even if you didn't pay this breeder an extra $100 that you couldn't use him to breed. The only thing that it would prevent you from is the ability to registering the dog's puppies with the AKC. Basically, the breeder is questionable IMO to even offer to sell you a puppy with breeding rights for an extra fee. |

The general rule is a good reputable breeder will not just give breeding rights away like that that because a good reputable breeder works extremely hard for there lines and to make them as free of health problems as a they can. And no offense but if she is just giving breeding rights away like that she probably didn't work really hard for her lines or care that much about the pups otherwise she would have a spay and neuter contract. When you bring a pup home at 12 weeks there's no way to tell if they will even be breeding quality until there 6, 7 or 8 months old. I would make sure that this breeder did all necessary health and genetic testing and if she didn't and you are still getting the pup from her you need to get pet insurance that covers genetic illnesses ASAP. |
The breeder I bought my female from did not give breeding rights, why would they not give you breeding rights? Just a curious question, I'm not going to breed her. |

I didn't want breeding rights when I got Bon Bon, so I didn't even bother to ask. I didn't get them and was perfectly happy. He got neutered before 6 months old. |

The breeders I got my furbaby from had given full registration right for breeding but that was after I long told them I have no interest in such things and plan to fix her as soon as she's old enough. Me thinks they trusted me enough to give an option or felt if I wanted to go that path that I'll be responsible (which I would've taken it very serious if I did choose that path, but again, I knew I didn't want to go that path, so she's been fixed as soon as she could be). They adopt out on referrals/recommendations from folks they know or have worked with and do DNA testings. So as much as I'm honored, I know that it's not a path for me and I don't want to use my furbaby that way (she is my baby and will stay that way :p). Besides, it's a lot of money and stress to do all that from what I understood. And that was certainly not what I was looking for when I got her. Though on the one hand, I won't lie, it would be nice to have a mini "her" but again, I'm not looking to reproduce her so I'll just appreciate her more :3 |
