Flea Season! (yay..) So it's that time of year when all the jerk fleas come out to ear our furbaby's This is Logan's first spring. I'm curious what type of flea/tick prevention products you all use and how often? He's been pretty much an indoor pup since we got him in the middle of a brutal winter, but I want to start letting him play in our yard. We live right near the woods so we have all kinds of insect guests in our yard! I want to get him something good. I've heard great things about Advantix, but I figured I'd ask my fellow yorkie-parents what you all like to use? also where do you buy from? So many options out there! I just want to make sure I get something good for him. He's 5 1/2 months old now. |
Rotten fleas! We use Frontline Plus and split an individual dose between the 2 boys. |

Yeah I was curious about how much to use (of any of them) because of how small yorkies are haha! Does Frontline Plus take care of ticks too? We have deer ticks around here so I worry about that :( |
dog I hate fighting those fleas and ticks. I have used Revolution in the past with not problems. I will start researching the web again to see if that is what I will use. People walk into the pet store and just pick any ole poison and wind up making their dogs sick. Please be careful whatever you use. You are wise to ask us Yorkie lovers because we are very cautious with our babies. This stuff is down right poison. If it makes my dog vomit I do not give it. If they go crazy I will not give it. Someone needs to come up with a Natural solution for these dog gone fleas! |
Hmm okay so I'm looking up all of these different brands. People seem partial to K9 Advantix. I'm wondering, with these topical solutions, could I split up a dose? He's so small and still growing and it seems as though they only come in standard (BROAD) weight ranges. Even the one "for small dogs" a full dose might be too much for him. At that rate, would it make sense to buy a pack for larger dogs and dose him appropriately for his weight with a needle-less syringe? I'm read a bunch of mixed reviews. Some folks say they do that, while others say it's crazy and they'd never! haha I'm just figuring it makes sense scientifically. It's the same chemical in the large-dog size as the small dog size, just a different dose, right? |
Glad we don't have flees here. Just need to make sure she is drinking enough water. |
Also- the product my vet sells is called Vectra. Any thoughts on that product if anyone has used it? |
Ok so I think we're going to go with K9 Advantix. It seems to have a lot of great reviews. I'm still wondering if it would be okay to measure out 0.4ml (the small dog dose) from a larger dog dose. They all cost about the same give or take a few bucks, but the larger doses come with much more product that I figure would last a lot longer. Anyone have any input? Have you done this? |
I was recommend comfotis for flea control. Has anyone used or heard of this? |
Quote:
Yeah actually. Someone else recommended that to me. I'm just more comfortable with topical prevention. Comfortis is a pill I believe, right? |
Yes it is and I heard the topicals can be a pain in the butt because yorkies have long fur and it runs down there sides and back and then they can lick it and rub it off. I would rather use a pill for mine..its safer and less mess in my opinion. Im looking into a flea and tick/heartworm prevention called Sentinel. |

Yeah I head ya. Yorkie hair can be a beautiful pain in the butt! Haha. My in-laws use Sentinel for their Cairn Terrier and they love it |
Ive talked with 2 local vets who said Frontline and Advantage have stopped working (around here). One uses Revolution, one uses Parastar |
dog I used Revolution with no problems on my two boys. I will probably do that again. I take them in to the vet for a heartworm test and then the vet will call Petmeds and order the stuff for me. |
I use revolution on my yorkie and all my kitties, here in Cali advantage and frontline do not work on the fleas here anymore. I like my vet because they has a pharmacy as well, so I just order as needed and have it mailed directly to my home from the vet. |

I don't know if you can split Advantix. I have not used it. You could ask your vet. We tried Advantage once, a different product, and I ended up washing it off Teddy immediately. It must have been burning because he went crazy trying to scratch at it. |
Yeah I wonder if advantage is still a good product around here (Philadelphia) I have heard that fleas are becoming resistant to Frontline around here. I decided to go with advantix. I put it on him today. Bought the correct amount. I couldn't justify cutting corners financially with something that I wasn't sure how he'd react to yet. Problem though.... I put it on him but it seems to have gotten more on one side of his back than the other. Is this still OK? |
I've been wondering about this too. We live in apartments and the grass here seems to have fleas. :( I've been picking them out every day after taking him out to potty but I need something to help me keep them off him. Has anyone ever purchased the shampoo bars on etsy that say they are flea repellent? |

As far as it being on one side more than the other, its fine, the skin absorbs the oil into the body either way. |

Something natural that works for me I buy 4oz of clove oil. I put 1oz in a spray bottle and add 8 oz water put it on there body and fleas are dead. Nags and Mosquitos stay away too. Repeat 2 times a week. I even put it on me here in Florida too much Mosquitos. I love the smell too. I discovered this from my breeder as to my princess is allergic to frontline. |

flea busters for the house is the best, good for a year |
I figured I would make a list: Sentinel only does fleas and worms like heart worm and tape worm, hook worm, round worm Comfortis for fleas only Revolution protects against heartworm, fleas, American Dog ticks, ear mites, and Sarcoptic mange mites when used as directed. K9 Advantix II kills flea and ticks including deer Advantage is flea and lice Advantage II for fleas Capstar for fleas Frontline Plus flea and ticks including deer ticks Vectra is fleas only Vectra D is for fleas and ticks including deer ticks I hope this helps everyone out |
I have friends that use Vectra D. . . .it kills and Repels and kills fleas, ticks including deer ticks, mosquitoes, biting and sand flies, lice and mites (excluding mange mites). They have used all the rest and will never go back This is the site Vectra This is the product information http://www.vectrapet.com/Home/About-...ct-Information |
what about parastar that is what lola used last year and she had no reaction to it, which is always a concern but hardly anyone on YT mentions is, do you think it is any good |
the reviews on Vectra D don't seem to good, I also looked up Parastar, they were a little better but still not great, I bet it is the same with many of the other, ugggggh I hate making this decision, I agonize over it every year and I am on the way to the vet, think I will stick with Parastar but it bothers me that no one talks about it. I also give Lola the chewable heart guard which my vet does not seem to want to use anymore, but I don't want to switch since I have had good luck and this way I do heart worm on the first and flea and tick on the 15th Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Vectra 3D Flea Tick Mosquito Topical Treatment, Dogs 56-95 lbs (6 Doses) |
