Neutering I know it's been covered but I don't remember what I didn't learn.. We,ve decided to neuter our 5 month old male..Vet wants to do it now..He is just beginning to heist his leg outdoors..He is puppy pad trained in the house and doing great..I would like to wait until he is 8 - 9 months old to neuter him but I don't want to risk him heisting his leg inside...What's the consensus? Thanks |
I'd wait until at least 6 months. I don't know whether it's true in dogs, but in cats, if you neuter males too early, the urethra will stop growing in diameter and they won't be able to pass stones as easily. When I had a cat with bladder stones, that's what the vet said, and he required catheterization. All in all, I think it's best for dogs to finish their growth and development before they're neutered. |
My Chachi was neutered at 7 mos and he lifts his leg outside but not inside the house |
I fixed my Gizmo at just over six months, and he too lifts his leg outside but still squats inside on his potty pads :-) |

I really don't think age has anything to do with the leg lifting. Doodlebug was neutered at 5 months and was hiking his leg at least a month before his neuter and is still a leg lifter. Bogey was at least a year when he was neutered and never lifts his leg. They were both neutered on the same day. |
My primary reason for neutering is to reduce the chances that he will mark in the house..Is neutering a factor? |
