Check your stainless steel dog bowls A couple of months ago I bought new stainless steel dog bowls. They weren't made in USA but they were heavy and expensive so I bought them thinking they would be OK. I usually wash them in hot soapy water and let them air dry overnight. Yesterday I was in a hurry and washed them the same way but dried them with a papertowl. I looked down and my hands and the papertowel were black from the finish on the stainless steel coming off. Macy and Molly were eating out of these things. I have now ordered stainless steel bowls online that are made in the USA and should be here in 3 - 4 days. If you buy dog bowls at PetSmart, Petco or a pet boutique, please check the label on the back and see where they were made. |

Here is an interesting discussion of what the black stuff is: Black residue on new stainless steel cookware - Cookware Forum - GardenWeb I have this problem with the bottom of a couple of heavy duty cookie sheets that I have. |

I would wonder if the black residue would be safe, so I agree I wouldn't want my pups eatting out of the bowls. But from the link Maximo posted it could happen with bowls made in the usa as well. I always thought ss was best because of antibacterial properties... now I wonder. |

Thanks for link. After reading the article, the black stuff sounds harmless but I wouldn't want to eat out of a bowl that the mirror finish is coming off and my girls won't be using them anymore either. They are now in the trash (the bowls, not the girls). I ordered new ones from Basis Pet (which are made in the USA) and hope I don't have this problem again. |

Eww the top part of the beater from my kitchen aid mixer does this. I never thought it would be a problem with dog bowls. |

Thanks for the heads up. I use Bella bowls...need to check them, I always air dry it after washing it in soapy hot water. So I need to wipe it w/a paper towel? |

Check your ceramic bowls too... |

I have heard that stainless steel can break down, especially if the bowls are exposed to sunlight and if the surface is broken, you should throw them out. |

I agree, I wouldn't want my dogs eating that stuff. With my baking sheets, I use an SOS pad to scrub the black off the bottom. I use them as drip pans when I cook in other containers. Interesting about the dishwasher. I would like a stainless steel one too. |

"It is not uncommon for ceramic items used for cooking or simply for decoration to contain lead. In fact, lead has been used in the glazing process for ceramic dishes, bowls, pitchers, plates and other utensils for centuries. Typically, after being fired in a kiln, a piece of ceramic will appear smooth and shiny due to the lead in the glaze. However, in order to ensure that the items are safe for use, it is necessary to heat the ceramic at very high temperatures for a long enough period of time. If this step is not done properly, the ceramic could contain levels of lead that pose a threat to human health. Based on his knowledge from the study that both Mexico and China are often major source of imports containing lead, O’Malley was curious to find out whether the ceramic items he observed in many Chinatown stores also contained lead. The results of the study were shocking. O’Malley and his fellow researchers found that 22 out of the 87 items purchased from stores within the Chinatown district, approximately 25 percent, returned positive results for lead. In comparison, 5 out of the 49 items purchased in stores in neighborhoods outside of Chinatown, or 10 percent, contained lead." There are standards for ceramics used in items for human food preparation, but lead shows up even where it's not supposed to. I don't even know whether there are lead standards for ceramics to be used for pet bowls. |

Okay how about glass bowls? Whats the lowdown on glass? |
