I have never had anyone tell me that before. They almost universally tell me how cute Cookie is, and same back when I had Minnie, whenever we're on walks or I take her into the vet or off to Petsmart, and so on. |
After they spend any time at all around a Yorkie, most of those "big dog" guys come to understand just how wrong they were to think a toy terrier isn't a real dog who can usually back their big, "real" dog off and out of the room, if he's a mind to. I realize it's usually just due to the bigger dog's voluntary deferral to the little guy with the 'tude but it sure shuts the braggarts' mouths when my little guy runs their dog off. |
In this instance, it was definitely a small minded thing. My husband's "friend" has always felt the need to try and put him down. Funny thing, people definitely don't say this to him in person. He's 6'4" and 280... lol. Honestly, most things that people say are positive. It's too bad that some people feel that they need to bring other people down because they are unhappy with themselves :p |
I get that one in awhile, I got it the other day at the bank, he didnt want to pet him because he wasnt a big dog, butt head his loss. Im sorry that happened michelle |
Can you imagine Yorkie attitude in a 100 lb body? They would take over the Earth! Seriously though, I do dislike the term "toy" for any dog--the AKC could have chosen better. |

It seems revealing sentiment, compassion or admiration just doesn't fit the macho profile these modern day idiots pursue. I've had many big dogs and now in an apartment and towards the end of my life I have a very small dog, with a huge heart full of love... |

I would have replied "Oh, that's too funny. I just told your wife to get a real man!" Of course, I'm a bit*h. :/ |
My son wanted a "real dog" when he was 11 - so we got him a Lab - he loves all animals & now has 2 Labs & 2 Chi's, 2 goats, 2 horses, 2 cats, 2 pigs - sounds like Noah's Ark!!! |
Depending on my mood (how bitchy) I feel, I reply with a sweet smile and say, "Thank you for your comment, have a nice day", or "I think I'll just stick with my AKC Champion, you can have your real dog." |

I love the second response ;) I've had someone tell me that before and also that my baby is as small as a "rat." There are so many other small animals out there like bunnies and baby tigers....... not a rat. I could've said many things about their 60 lb bulldog.. because I just don't find them cute and super lazy... but I didn't. Some people don't understand that a pup is like family. You would never go around telling someone their baby looks like a rat or doesn't look like a "real human".. people forget this. I was bathing my furbaby one time and you know how when you bathe a yorkie it's basically just their little body because their hair is wet.. well, the 60 lb bulldog owners called her ugly.....HOW DARE YOU!! |
Meanwhile when my baby goes to the vet everyone stops to say she is so cute and they love her outfits... don't see anyone saying that to their bulldog ;) Haters gonna hate! LOL |
I actually find all of those "insulting" comments amusing. I KNOW who and what my precious pups are and their value -- both love and $$ wise. Ignorance can be changed through education, but stupid is forever. |
Well in my experience it is not just men. Actually my two sisters (who I rarely see) were visiting my home one day several months back. And this was the first time they met Razzle our Yorkie. After about one hour or two, when they saw Razzle sit, lay down on command, and how confident he was with our big boy Magic. They both had some comments to make. One sis, said well I have never liked the small dogs I run into in the elevator as on more than one occasion have had my ankles nipped, and nobody shuts up their yappy dog. My other sister said; well I sure see this wee one's attitude and I love it. I said YT's with correct temperament have very little give up in them - they are pretty tough beasties at least in the own mind. Most little dogs I meet either cringe away in fear, or start yipping a whole lot --- this I don't like. To which I responded it is with any size of dog that is mis-behaving more a comment on the owner than the dog. Big or small you need to do your training and socialization. |

Truer words have never been spoken! Cusos to you for helping your sisters open their eyes a bit wider :) |
There is no love like yorkie love !!!! |
I have never have that kind of comments, at least not to my face... on the contrary I usually get complements and people wanting to pet Mike and Molly all the time, even the big dog owners I hope I never get a comment like the ones you guys are talking about, some are very mean..... I am not a very patient kind of person.... |
This is as irritating to me as when women say "anyone who gives birth without drugs is stupid". I have to bite my tongue to keep from responding "nah, my vagina is just better than yours" (No offense to anyone who chose drugs during childbirth-I am all about choosing what's best for you, and if that's an epidural, great! But I don't like it when people tell me I'm stupid for not making 'their' choice) |
real men love tiny dogs I just adopted a furbaby I name Ferghus. My eighteen year old son adopted his brother and named him Wallee. :) While I do have a cattle breed mix who is a rescue, she is fifteen years old, I have always been partial to little dogs. So much personality in such a tiny package. This is my first yorkie having always had chihuahuas before. I did ask my son if he was concerned about comments people might make about him having a yorkie and he stated no he was secure in who he was and worst case scenario Wallee would be a great chick magnet. LOL. When his dad and I got married I had a chihuahua that was 8yo. His dad expressed disgust over having a "worthless" dog. Till the sweethart killed a rat that had gotten into our house, took to hunting, camping and fishing like no other and showed him what a real watchdog was. She only barked at strangers. I have no doubt that Ferghus and Walle will be wonderful. They already are. |
I grew up with big dogs (but my family also has lots of land), so this is my first small pup. People keep on saying, why would you get such a small dog. My response is.....I live in a city and in an apartment at that. Here in Las Vegas we also don't have backyards. Usually you walk out your backdoor and a wall greets you, just 3 feet away. Yorkies are great apartment dogs and don't need much space to be happy. I don't think it is fair to get a big dog like a Lab who would need lots of space to run and pool to swim in. Usually shuts them up. Also, when I first told my sister about my Maggie, she said why would you get a yappy dog? Then her dogs started to bark (loudly). I said, and your dogs don't bark. She said point taken. |
Perhaps the proper reply might be: "Get a real life!" |
