Ugh! The ticks have started here....and there's snow on the ground! It was snowing (just a little) and 31 degrees today and tonight I found a tick on Lilah's neck. It wasn't there earlier today so she must have picked it up when my daughter took her for a walk. My son had one on him the other day too. I HATE ticks! Gross little suckers  Lilah is on Revolution (its due to be reapplied on the 28th) but I guess it didn't work |
Revolution is not a tick repellant... it doesn't work on fleas or American Dog Ticks until the pest bites the dog. It does not work on all ticks, only the American Dog Tick... see your vet about additional tick control if it was a different type of tick. |
wow jes already. I use revolution also and yes they have to bite for it to kill off the tick. its the only thing that works on the fleas here in nh last season though. |
Sorry to say revolution does not work on deer ticks. You need to use a topical or something organic |
I used Advantix II but I'd find ticks way too often. I've read that ticks were becoming resistant to a lot of these meds which is a scary thought. But if I had to chose from two evils, I'd rather deal with the tick than fleas. |
looked like a dog tick (but could have been a deer tick) and it was quite embedded. I can deal with snakes, and with spiders, but ticks are just wwwwwww (Ive had lyme disease twice) We use revolution as a flea preventative because our vet said that the frontline/advantage etc were becoming not very effective against fleas (my previous yorkies used frontline). I'm going to ask about the best tick med when the girls get their bloodwork on Monday |
I use frontline plus on my cats and Galen. And (knock on wood) I have not had a problem with fleas |

How to identify different ticks |
size-wise it looked more like a dog tick but it was on the smaller side of some of the dog ticks I've seen. The tick that gave me Lyme the first time was no bigger than a freckle We've had lot of tick encounters here with 8 kids, dogs, and having a house that backs up to the woods :( |
We use Parastar (faithfully) and Bubba still tested + for Lyme disease exposure 2years ago and had to take antibiotics. I never saw a tick on him and they are tested yearly. Mine love to take long walks and go to the dog park. When I brush them, I run my hands all over them looking at any little bump or mark. This year is supposed to be really bad for ticks and fleas. |
Here in New England, I use Heartgard and Frontline Plus. I have heard people complain about Frontline Plus and they have opted for Advantix II. I have heard that there are more problems with anaplasmosis infection than lyme these days but I'm sure that depends on where people live exactly. I have no intention of changing from Frontline Plus, it has worked for me for 14 years now since my older two were puppies. I have never seen a flea on the dogs or in my home and never have pulled a tick off of any of them. I use Frontline most of the year, stopping only in the dead of the really cold months but am about to restart it April 1. |
