My Yorkie/Chi itching like crazy
 
My Yorki/chi starting scratching and itching about 3 weeks ago..Now before you say fleas etc...we live in Canada..It is very cold and dry here so I suspect it is the dry weather...I bought this natural oil from the vet and put it in his skin but would like to know if any of you know of any cream or ointment I may have on hand that will relieve the itching...


He is red under his armpit and inside the ears..


any thoughts!!

Sounds like some type of reaction. He needs to visit the vet ASAP.

Hmmmm..The vet didn't seem to think it was anything more than dry skin...I just wanna try and get him some relief..He is not really raw and not bleeding juts irritated...

Is the oil spritzing type? I don't know of any instant relief but for longer term, how about putting some fish oil in his food? Maybe spritzing him more often would help.

We started both our Yorkies on fish oil about 3 days ago so we are hoping that will help also...

You said he had red skin in his ears and under his legs and he was scratching. I'm very surprised the vet didn't suggest in the very least Benadryl and possibly a steroid, suggest a food changed or all of the above. I really think you need to either go back to your vet for reevaluation or move onto a Vet Dermatologist for diagnosis. I know that I wouldn't be very comfortable or happy it hung for weeks.

Does he chew his paws? Rub his face on the carpet or furniture?

He does not chew his paws...or really rub his face into the carpet unless he is playing..not into the furniture either....

What did the vet say it was from?

To me, this sounds like possibly some kind of allergy. Did you switch anything...his food, treats, anything that touches his skin?

Are things starting to bloom in your area yet? Check pollen.com to check your area for pollens.

If he is chewing or licking his paws, then I'd absolutely suspect allergies as this is a cardinal sign of it. If it's allergies, read here for what to do: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

If it's armpit and ears only, it could be more food related...

You can try giving Benadryl, but you need to give it at least 3x a day as it has a very short half life. If you have hydrocortisone cream or Benadryl cream you could use that in his arm pits.

They both eat kibble and dog treats of various kinds but we have cut back on the treats...The vet thinks it is dry skin...We are very cold here right now..-20 degrees so there is no sign of Pollens here yet....our spring is a joke...be lucky if we see it by June...Grrrr....he is not chewing or licking at his paws at all..I do have cortisone cream from when my daughter needed it so I may put some of that on his armpit..

Ann correct me if I'm wrong about the Benadryl.....if it's given orally is should not be used topically as well. It's either or :confused:

I have the Benadryl stick but I am afraid it will hurt/sting him...

Have you tried Vetericyn instead of Benadryl/hydrocortisone? It's really good product. If by chance your pup licks it, it's non toxic so it won't harm him. There are two types but I heard the hydro gel works better. It's bit expensive but well worth it.
