Lowest age you can sell pups? Isn't there a law that states the pups have to be 8 weeks old? I'm looking for another pup to play with Gunner. Found an add online that reads "pups ready on March 24 @ 6 weeks". I know this is way too young to sell a pup, but isn't there a law that states they have to be 8 weeks. Also, these pups look tiny and sickly, I doubt any of them will live thru one bout of hypoglycemia with someone that doesn't know what they are doing and without the momma dog. |

Here are the laws by state: Age to Sell Puppy Table In Michigan, it says 8 weeks, but the law only applies to pet shop owners. Maybe it doesn't apply to other breeders. BTW, 6 weeks is way too young. I feel bad for the puppies and wonder whether they could survive. |
Cali is 8 wks, but its much better to wait till 12 for the puppy. When I rescued Gizmo, he was 9 weeks old and in a hypoglycemic coma. He almost died, but thankfully after a ton of care on my part and many vet visits he's now healthy. I would never buy a 6 wk old puppy. |
There is more to placing a pup than just age. There are other things that need to be considered and each breeder is different. Of course they should always follow state laws as well as take into consideration each pups individual progress, health, size and the type of living situation each will be going to as well. I personally would never ever let a pup leave its mother or my home any sooner than eight weeks of age. There are just too many things that can and do go wrong and that pup is better if left with the breeder who is better equip to handle those types of things. You can't imagine the horror stories here on YT of young pups being sent to their new homes way to early. Than that baby getting sick and the new owner/family not know how or what to do. It can be very scary for anyone. |
When our pups were 6 weeks, I was surprised by how many people told me "oh they're about ready to go to their new homes then" Ummm no, not for another 6 weeks. People were shocked that I would keep them that long. |
Sigh~probably some idiot who has no idea what they are doing and out to make a buck. If they sell them at 6 weeks...that's less food they have to buy...less vet bills they have to pay...and they may look too sick to sell if they hold on and wait too much longer...or they will get too big and people will figure out that they aren't purebred yorkies, but instead a mix between their pet yorkie. and mutt next door. They better get the money while the gettin's good!!! BARF!! You should contact them and tell them it's against the law to sell puppies under 8 weeks of age. Chances are, they'd have no idea the law is "just" for pet stores. |
Wow, 6wks is SO unbelievably young, especially for toy breeds. Whoever is selling at that age is not interested in the pups' actual well being AT ALL, imo. :( |
It's different in different states. I think here in Texas 8 weeks is the youngest a breeder can transfer ownership, but they can take deposits at any time. |
Bad breeders just want to get the pups out so they don't have to spend much money on caring for them. A reputable breeder will not let a pup go until 12 weeks old and a puppy you get before then could have bitting issues, socialization issues and even potty training issues. |

I'm still amazed that anyone would sell such tiny pups at such an early age. I didn't get Gunner till he was 12 weeks and he seemed fragile to me then. I did find a pup. One of my friends at bowling knew of a puppy in town that was being rehomed. He is a yorkie poodle mix that is just over 4 months and is 2.10lbs. He is a funny little thing. |
There are a lot of people out there that breed dogs as their sole means of income or at the very least a big supplement to their income. They care little about what happens to that puppy after it leaves their possession. While a pup can technically survive at 6 weeks of age it is cruel for both the mom and pup to separate them at such a young age. |
