Potty Trained in One Week! Hi, everyone. I just got my Yorkie a week ago - at 9 weeks of age. I had read nightmares about how difficult it was to potty train, let alone indoor potty train. I live in a high rise in Dubai and I am gone 9 hours a day. I have been leaving her confined to a small bathroom while I'm at work and at night. I have used both the indoor potty patch and pee pads. When I am home, I would have her tethered to me with a leash and harness. For about 5 days, my house reeked of urine. Finally, I washed all of the floors really well (it's all tile, no carpet) I left the potty patch on the balcony (door open) and one pad with a tray in the living room. The last two days (granted it's the weekend) I have given her full run of the house (with me still checking up on her and letting her know I'm onto her if she starts sniffing an area) and she has used the pad in the living room nearly every single time, or gone potty directly next to it if it it is full of waste. So, if we are hanging out on the balcony, she will automatically defecate on the grass and if we are chilling in the living room, she immediately goes to the pad. And while she is sleeping in the bathroom at night, she wakes up to use her pad. Is this too good to be true? As soon as I try to move the pad into my half bathroom, she will have an accident in the same place where the pad was. Although, she will use it in the bathroom when confined with a baby gate. Any tips? |
Boncuk only goes in the correct place when he wants. He's 12 weeks and we have had him since he was 7 weeks. We have 3 pee pads in the house. Sometimes he will go on them others not. Sometimes he will pee on the pee pad and poop on the tile. He does well for a few days then it like he had an argument with the pee pad. He walks up scratches it, growls at it and pees on the floor. If you have given him given him more access to different rooms you have also given him more chances for accidents. |
Welcome to YT, when I had puppies, it took 3 weeksto paper train them, pee pee & poo on news paper (no wee wee pads at that time lol) 3 weeks they knew where to go, no accidents, after one month of them having no accidents and hitting their mark, I then started on the house breaking, (doing their business outside) that took 4 weeks due to the fact I worked and was gone 9 hours, with in a month, they were 100 % house broken, no more pee pee paper. No all yorkies are the same, some take a bit longer then others. Good luck. |
With ours we moved their pads closer to the door a little at a time each day. After a few days we moved it to the porch then to the yard. Didn't take long at all. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Congratulations on the potty training success! Definitely not too good to be true. My Max was easy. Maybe it is in his DNA because his brother Teddy is advanced in this area too. Regarding moving the pad, think about the distance she has to travel to get to the pad. For a small pup, the pad needs to be close and easily accessible. When my boys were smaller, I kept the pad in the same place. Now I can move it anywhere and they know where to go. She may have just forgotten that the pad moved, and by the time she got to the spot where she thought it would be, she really needed to go. |
