Good amount to feed? For anyone who has a yorkie about 8 pounds, I wonder how much kibble you feed. Cookie is about 7.5-8 pounds, and will turn a year old next week. Ever since I got her I have free fed, a cup at a time of Royal Canin. For the most part she has eaten a 1/2 cup a day to maybe 3/5 a cup, but her appetite has really started increasing the last week and a half with the coming of spring. Yesterday she ate virtually all of the ful cup I put out. Maybe it's because she is getting a lot more outside time and thus exercise with winter ending, but I don't want her to get fat. How much do those of you with active yorkies my pup's size feed? Thanks! |
1/2 cup per day for teddy who is 10.5 lbs |
I feed 1/4 cup to Pebbles and Dude twice daily. They weigh 10 and 11 lbs. Bogey, who should weigh about that (or less) now gets a little less than that amount because he's become too fluffy  They all get a tbs of pumpkin since Bogey has been having some issues and the vet suggested adding a fiber. If you offer additional treats during the day this need to be considered as well. |
My two eat 1/3 of a cup split into 2 meals. Ziva at 5 weighs 6 3/4 lbs- she had gone up to 8 lbs and the vet almost fell over- it took me quite a while to get her to her present weight- she is so boxy and gains easily. Abby at 3 weighs 6 1/2 lbs and is long and lean I give her extra food on a busy day(a tablespoon) to keep her weight up! |
My yorkie and chi both weigh 8 lbs. They get 1/2 C per day (1/4 in the morning, 1/4 at night). But I need to feed my yorkie a little less because he is getting "fluffy". So I'm going to have to feed him less than a 1/2 C per day. |
Thanks guys. It surprises me to hear even the larger teapots are on half a cup per day. I'll have to consult with my vet soon to see if he thinks Cook is overweight, as I need to take her in pretty soon anyways to get more comfortis. The bag of Royal Cabin 28 says an 8 pound yorkie should be on a cup a day, but I figured that was bs. |
If she feels good by your touch, then feed what you're feeding. If she starts to feel boney, increase the amount. You should be able to feel a layer of fat between her skin and ribs, and the spine shouldn't be too evident. With fluffy pets, this is the only way to tell if they're getting enough to eat. Mine tend to need a bit more food as they get more active in the spring, then less when it gets too hot, then more again as temps cool down in the fall, then less in the winter. |
Teddy is around 10 pounds and gets 1/2 cup of kibble daily. Toki is 8 pounds and when I was feeding her kibble, she would get maybe 3 tbsp twice a day which is a little less than 1/2 cup. |
I feed 1/2 c R/C, once a day, over winter, to my breeders .....pregnant females are on free feed special diet for pregnant bitches.....as we are able to increase activity in Spring through fall, with swimming and running like crazy people all over the "playground" in the yard, it goes up to 1 cup. If they slow down during a really hot summer, we scale back down....feel your dog and go by what you are seeing in front of you. |
2 Attachment(s) Jackson is 17lbs, very active, and eats 1/2 cup of kibble per day. He also gets wet food mixed in. He also gets treats (usually daily) for training, as well a Dentastix at night, so I try to include those calories. If he does A LOT of exercise (i.e. swimming, etc), I will up his kibble to 2/3 cup if he still seems hungry. But when I used to try to feed him the recommended amount on the bags (1 cup +) he never ate it. I think he would turn into a tub of lard if I fed him more than 3/4 cup lol. I keep him in this condition most of the time: Attachment 397573 Attachment 397574 |

I guess Cook felt stuffed from yesterday, because I free fed with a cup in her bowl today and she only ate 1/3 cup. |
I was surprised to see most of your dogs don't eat that much. We give Boncuk a 1/2 cup of dry food in his bowl everyday, then he gets a 1/2 package of Cesar wet food mixed with 1 (table) teaspoon of pea's and 1 teaspoon of pumpkin or squash, when I get home from work( about 4 pm). He is 12 weeks and weights 5 pounds. But he doesn't really get snacks. He is very active from 4 to 8 pm. |

I am surprised at how little food your dogs get. I follow what the bag says for her age and weight and she gets feed 1/4 c twice a day, so 1/2 c total. She doesn't always eat it all and some days she will only eat 1/4 c. And my yorkie doesn't even weigh 4lbs. |
