Buying a yorkie tomorrow!! i need some help please. Hello everybody, I was going on Craigslist to find some local yorkies for sale and I came across this 3 month old male yorkie for $400. I talked to the owner and she said that there were 3 people that wanted to see the pup before me and she'll let me know if they don't get. Well i got an email saying the pup is still available and the price is down to $350 if i get him tomorrow. Which kinda made me question why would anyone do that since yorkies are in high demand and they sell for more than $350 easily. We have never owned a puppy before so I don't know how to make sure the puppy is okay and basically how do I know that I'm not getting screwed with this deal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Buying a puppy on CL is risky... I'd have to ask why/ how this pup became available for sale? Is he being sold with any health guarantee? Has he been vet checked and given a clean bill of health? Good luck and don't go alone. Did you ask them to email you some pics of the puppy? |
I would just be sure you see the pup in person before any money is exchanged and everything that kat said above also. |
I wouldn't respond to a Craig's List ad for a pup. There a so many pups on rescue sights. Try Pet Finder. Stay away from Craig's. |
Find a reputable breeder and then buy your pup from her. You usually get what you pay for....buying puppies on Craigslist is a big mistake on a good day....what in the world could possibly be wrong with this poor puppy that 3 people would reject him at $400.00 which is about 1/3rd the price a Yorkie puppy SHOULD be running, give or take a couple dollars. You will regret even thinking about doing this! Vaccinations for this pup would have cost more than she is asking for the baby, so you KNOW it is unvaccinated....this is a heartbreak looking for a place to happen. |
If your wanting to rescue a puppy please go to a shelter not craigslist it could be a scam, they could have stolen the yorkie and that pup could end up very sick with genetic illnesses later on in life or even be sick now and it could cost you a lot of money. If you want to buy a puppy please buy one from a reputable breeder. |

Hello and welcome. I agree with everyone else. Please do not get the pup from CL. No reputable breeder sells pups there. Please check out the YTCA website for a reputable breeder. Ask a lot of questions. You will pay a little more but what you will safe in vet bills later on is worth it. I did. Good luck in your search and please stay and read. We have a lot of info here. If you check my blog I have a list of questions to ask. |
Please stay away from CL!! I agree with everyone else! Better to buy from a reputable breeder and enjoy your pup! Beware..you will fall in love immediately! Best to fall in love with a healthy pup!! |
Unless you are looking to either rescue a puppymill or byb puppy, go to a reputable breeder. I rescue animals, all of my kids ( kitties and puppy) are all rescues, and Gizmo was rescued from a sick person who was starving him to make him a micro yorkie, then when he had about an hour to live he was listed on Craigslist. That is what you will find on CL !!! I knew I was rescuing a sick puppy when I responded and went to get him, from someone who gave me the heads up that this puppy would be on there. Gizmo has LP in his back right leg, he was in a coma by the time I got to him, and I have spent a lot of money n him as I expected going into it. So unless you are ready to either be getting a mixed breed or a yorkie with health problems I would look for a reputable breeder. With Gizmo I knew I was going into it with many vet bills ahead of me, and that he was very sick, but most people don't. The fact that the pup is so cheap, and the price has been reduced, he's been rejected by 3 people should be enough red flags unless you want to spend money no matter what it takes, which is what I fully expected, and what I have gotten. I had no illusions that I was getting a healthy great puppy, because I knew he was almost dead, and all I cared about was saving his life. I would ask to meet both parents, see where they live as most of these people on Craigslist will want to keep that info from you and then use burner phones so you can't find them once they get your money. I tried to turn in the girl that bred and almost killed Gizmo but she used a burner phone, and met me at a false address, which I was fully aware of going into it. The question I think you have to ask yourself, are you ready and do you have enough money for vet bills, or not getting what you want? That's what you really have o ask yourself. Like I said, I was ready and knew exactly what I was getting into, but do you? Lets just say I have spent at least 4 times so far what I gave the girl to get Gizmo out of this girls hands so far, on vet bills. And I gave her more than you are talking about paying. Unless you want a mixed breed or a sick pup, find a reputable breeder and not a pup on CL. |
Oh and I left out that Gizmo is only 9 months old so far :-) |
There is no way to know whether or not you're not getting screwed in the deal. Paying vet bills for a sick dog is going to cost you more than buying a healthy pup from a quality breeder willing to provide a good health guarantee, and could be a nightmare emotionally after you have bonded to your new yorkie baby. I mean you're really rolling the dice here buying from an anonymous person on craigslist versus a well-known breeder whose information is all out there for the world to see. |
