Hyper male Yorkie 16 week old puppy I think my Yorkie puppy is hyperactive. He is 16 weeks old and so different from my female who is now 3 years old. He is so hyper that when I'm holding him he'll try to jump out of my arms. If I hold on to him he will shake his head and whole body hard. I'm amazed at just how hard he wiggles to get down. There is no holding him still and he mouth's everything. If I use the broom or vacuum he barks fiercely and chases them and is way too rough with my female Yorkie. I've had him since he was 7.5 weeks old. My female doesn't want to be around him. My vet says he just a male terrier but, I think he is hyper. I've been working with him by using an exercise pen and isolation for discipline. Also I've been working with training him tricks as they say this may help. He is an extremely fast learner and he just potty trained immediately and slept through the night at 8 weeks. There is no food aggression nor aggression toward anything except my broom and vac. I'm at my wit's end. Is his jumpy, wiggly extreme behavior normal for a male Yorkie? Can I expect him to be so overly hyper as an adult? I have raised a lot of puppies and never experienced one like him. |

That is normal for any puppy at that age. They typically will outgrow it with time, lots of training and given the chance to run off some of that energy. My guess is that it happens when you get home after being away for a number of hours. He just missed you and need time to run and play. Its a behavior that will need to be handled with quick, direct corrections. Something that will get his attention and snap him out of the unwanted behavior. I have never had a dog that has had that typical puppy like behavior as an adult. Some do but in my experience most do not. I normally will take about 2 yrs to outgrow that puppy playfulness. You are more than welcome to look at my site and the type of training I use to train my pups. Training Tips - Dawn's Yorkies |
My Lhasa was like that. She was just awful in puppy class, just wild as could be. The instructor said she probably wouldn't settle down until she was around a year and a half and she was right. Bitsy settled down and is the sweetest, calmest dog. Hang in there. I think they are like kids, some are just wilder than others. |
It sounds pretty much like a puppy. Puppies when they stay with there moms until 12 weeks learn about biting and socialization so he missed out on that she that would explain why he is rough with your female. A lot of puppies are hyper and some grow out of it and some don't. Training, playing chase/fetch and going for walks should help. |

Yep totally normal, my Gizmo still gets the zoomies :-) I can go to the bathroom and when I come out he's so excited, it's like I've been gone a year instead of a couple minutes :-) he is starting to calm down a tiny bit, but we go for walks every day and we also play a ton of fetch. Sounds like your boy needs some energy just worked out of him, although I can say my yorkie pup, Who is 8 months now, comes home from a walk with more energy then when he left, but soon after calms down and takes a little nap :-) |
My Piper is just like that and soo was my Niko. Piper is 7 months and Niko is 16 months now. Niko has calmed down to the point he worries at times his behavior is so different that a few months ago although he still plays well. Piper is at the stage of frantic play for 1 hour followed by 2 hour naps. The same with a yorkie mix foster, Olivia, that I have right now. He will calm down. Try some interactive games to give him stimulation when you can't devote time to him. Olivia especially loves them and they keep her occupied for long stretches. |
My 12 week Boncuk is the same. When we get home he is very hyper. He runs fast from room to room and fallows me everywhere. I always have to look to see where he is so I don't step on him. He's our only dog and is alone all day so I think he has lots of built up energy. It's cold here and still snowing so he can't go out for walks yet. |
