Please keep Gizmo in your thoughts :-( So last night Gizmo got into our cat litter box, and I didn't think he ate any of it, but this morning he was very lethargic and had the runs really bad, his whole potty pad in his xpen was covered when I woke up. So we rushed him to the vet. Thankfully the vet did not find any blockage and he didn't seem he had any pain as the doctor palpated him. So he's on a laxative and antibiotic, as well as just rice and boiled chicken for now. All he wants to do is sleep in his snuggle sack and has no appetite at all right now. I feel so bad for him, he just can't catch a break, first I save him from being starved to death from an unethical breeder trying to make micro yorkies which almost killed him and now this, and I feel so bad because he got into the cat box to begin with. He's never tried to go in it before because I have it in a cat litter box cabinet, but his kitty friend Lucy kept leading him over to it, and unfortunately he finally went in :-( please remember to be careful if you have cats, because I was to confident that he would not go in there since I've had him for over 7 months, but eventually they do :-( |
Poor Gizmo! Praying for his speedy recovery. Sending gentle hugs to your little boy. |
Poor baby! Praying for a speedy recovery! |
I hope Gizmo feels better soon. |
He was eating the litter, or just the cat poop? That stuff is small enough for him to pass, right? That's awesome that there is no blockage. I'd have been so worried about that. |
Aww poor Gizmo. I hope he gets better soon The kitty poop is bad. I have a gate up when Galen is out and about for that reason. For some reason, dogs think cat poop is a delicacy :eek: |
That's the thing, is I don't think he ate the cat poop because there didn't seem to be any disturbed. His face was covered in the litter when I caught him and grabbed him out of there. I've already removed the litter box from the cabinet, and instead put the box on top of the cabinet because he can't reach that high, then I put one of his potty pads inside instead. I'm thinking he was trying to imitate his kitty friend Lucy, so if he wants to go in there for potty he's free to do so now :-) I don't know if he consumed any of the litter or not, but something in there made him sick. The vet was saying the problem with them even getting a little bit, is it becomes like cement and actually adheres to the walls of the intestines instead of moving through. That's why the laxative, so if he goes more, it has a better chance of coming out the more he goes. If that does not improve the next step is to feed him natural husk, which actually binds to the particles and moves them out. I never knew about this but it is really good to know. I'm just so thankful I have a wonderful loving vet that cares as much about our Gizmo as we do. The good news from the vet was other than this, he's super healthy now and weighs 7lbs 2 Ozs !!!!! And he's not overweight and perfect BMI :-) its so amazing the poor little just over 1 lb pup I rescued is now so big and healthy, other then getting into the darn kitty box. |
Oh Gosh that sounds horrible. I had never though about the litter turning into a cement. So sorry about your pup... Hope he is well on his way to recovery.... |
Hope Gizmo gets better soon! I'll certainky keep him in my thoughts! Keep us updated! |
Taking care of a furbutt is like raising a child that will never grow up. :) No parents is perfect and we all try our best to give them the best possible life we can offer! Please don't feel bad or guilty. If you look on the bright side, you're preventing one more hazard that might have actually really done him a lot of harm. Gizmo is a fighter just like his mama so I'm sure he'll be back to himself in no time! ps. How about some chicken broth with the rice/chicken breast? The smell from the broth usually does the trick for my two when they don't want to eat. |
Is Gizmo feeling better today? |

Hope the little guy is feeling better! |
Thanks for the positive thoughts for my baby XOXO, he's a bit better today thank god. He ate a bit of chicken and brown rice a few times. I've been giving him just little bits every few hours, and syringing water into his mouth to keep him hydrated. Just about an hour ago I took him for a little walk, and his poop seems to be a bit more firm, as in not just all liquid :-) its still pretty wet but a lot better than it was yesterday :-) my 3 kitties layed vigil outside his pen all night watching over him, it was really cute to see them all care about their puppy like that. I'm much more relieved today than yesterday, I can say that for sure. I've also been adding just a little bit of nutrical to his boiled chicken and rice mix, and he seems to prefer that little bit of extra flavor to t. I kept his stool he did on his walk and am going to take it to the vet tomorrow because I think him and the kitties have worms. It's gotten quite warm here in Cali lately, so it seems flea and worm season has started early. Looks like they all will be treated for both within the next few days. I seen a little piece of worm in his stool, and I'm thinking that is what may have been the major issue instead of the cat litter, because when I caught him in the litter box, he did have litter on his face, but when I looked in his mouth when it happened, there was none in his mouth. Then today when I let him out of his pen for a bit of free time, he also starting scooting his butt across the floor. Anyways it won't hurt to be safe right :-) My daughter thinks I'm crazy, and keeps telling me Mom he's a dog not a child lol, and said I cook better for him than I do myself HAHAHAHA. Yes as you can tell I love my little Gizmo hehe. Thank you all again for keeping the little guy in your thoughts :-) |
Just seeing this and relieved to hear Gizmo is on the mend. So glad he got better - and now if he can keep that up - perfect! You sound like a great nurse, giving small meals often and syringing in some water regularly, some exercise for him. All that can make a big difference in how he gets through this. Hope those stools firm up but if not, back to the vet I know you'll be. |
Hope lil Gizmo is feeling a bit better today, they are little rascals, get into all sorts of mischief. I will keep your lil guy in my prayers. |
That's awesome to hear. I mean with worms it's just a pill, right? At least that's what it was when Cookie had them and was scooting her butt. Much better than the kitty litter turning to cement scenario. |
I was never so happy to see poop in my life lol, well at least one that resembled poop haha |

Very happy to hear he is improving. Praying he will be 100% again soon. Glad you are having his stool checked. |
Just read this thread and so pleased to hear your 'emerging' good news. Crystal had a related problem, probably caused by stress, when her mom was away for a fortnight. I'll never forget the feeling of relief when solidity returned, following four days on 'poop-watch'! I'm very mindful of what gets dropped on the floor (pills! etc) as she's like one of those mini robot hoovers instantly appearing and sucking up anything within seconds of it hitting the deck (how do they do that?) I believe these intelligent little creatures react so positively to our care and love as well. We are their mentors, medical chest and life long best friend, whose trust is such a treasured value to hold. I feel sure your affection and support has contributed in no small measure to affect recovery. They're always up to something that's for sure:)... |
In all my years did I ever think of the danger of a litter box but then again never had one using a litter box. So glad he is feeling better and like you say "they are always up to something" |
sending many prayers he is fully healed soon. |
Poor little Gizmo, I am so happy to read that he is doing better. Thank you so much for updating. A lot of people will post on a problem and then never update. People on this forum are very caring and look for updates because they do care so much about animals. |
I have a baby gate up where Kitty's litter box is. She can easily leap over the gate where the boys could not. I think I had kitty for almost a year before I caught Prince in it. Luckily, he didn't eat enough to make him sick. |
Cat pooh is one of Kyra's favorite snack :(. We consistently patrol the yard for it. Believe me if they eat any you will know, the smell on their little faces afterwards is horrible. We don't own any cats but our neighbors cats seem to think our yard is their litter box. |

I don't understand it either, my cats are fixed and totally indoor cats, with the exception of Gizmos buddy Lucy who only goes for walks with us on a leash haha :-) its too dangerous for cats to roam outside alone, mine are all rescued feral cats that have been raised and bottle fed by me. People not being responsible is how all these feral babies that I have rescued are born. On another more positive note :-) 2 trips back and forth to vets today and all 3 kitties, and Gizmo all got their worm shot, what a job that was lol. Gizmo is o much better but sleeping right now because the shot. His hind leg is sore where he got it, so I massaged and cuddled him for a while, and now he's napping :-) he's back to firmer poops, although not 100% like They were but from enough to pick up on a walk :-) he's also eating well and back to his regular diet, and the vet is very happy with his progress :-) I am breathing a sigh of relief right now after getting all the vet stuff over with this morning and all the chaos lol. Ahhhhh time to relax my back now and lay on my heating pad for a bit while he naps. Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers. It seems to have worked and gotten little Gizmo through yet another rough patch in his little road XOXO, oh and I totally messed up on his age lol, he's actually already 9 months old, not 8 as I posted in an earlier post. What's sad is my husband actually was the one to point it out to me hahaha. And I'm usually the details person around here lol. |
Happy to hear Gizmo is doing well and steadily improving. Glad to hear too that your big day at the vet is over. Whew! Praying Gizmo will be back to 110% soon. (Yorkies are more than 100%, lol, especially when they are puppies) |
