Lap Dogs? Hi guys, I had a yorkie (love of my life!) for 14.5 years. I adored him and miss him every single day, but he was never really the lap dog I had hoped for. He always wanted to be near us (laying by our feet), but really hated to be held and slept at the foot of the bed. I'm looking for a new puppy and want to get another yorkie, but i'm wondering if in general they tend to be independent and not cuddlers or if that was just my experience. So, a few questions: 1. Is your yorkie cuddly and what you would call a lap dog? 2. If so, what sex is your dog and do you think that makes a difference? 3. How old was your yorkie when you got him/her? I've also been told that when a yorkie is mixed with a maltese (morkie), they do tend to be more of a lap dog. Thoughts? |

2. Cookie is a female. Not sure it makes a difference though, as my last yorkie, Minnie was a female and preferred napping by the window to on my lap. 3. I got Cookie at 14.5 weeks from a wonderful breeder (Deb Sillers, aka Amazing Yorkies here) who gives her pups good personal attention hanging out with her to socialize them before putting them in their forever homes. Cookie was immediately confident around people and was my lap dog within maybe 3-4 hours of bringing her home. Words can't really express just how extremely pleased I am with how Deb Sillers raised her those first 14.5 weeks. Minnie I got at who knows what age, as an owner abandon left to starve in their backyard when her heartless idiots of owners moved. She was still a heck of a kisser (not as much as Cookie, but a lot) and had such a happy personality, but Minnie wasn't a lap dog. |
1- ZoE definitely isn't a lapdog. She grants me an occasional cuddle when she chooses, and will sometimes lay down next to me, and for the most part she is pretty independent. 2- ZoE is a female. I've only ever had females. My last yorkie was definitely more of a cuddle bug than Zo is. 3- I brought ZoE home when she was 6 weeks old. She was much more clingy as a young puppy. Somewhere around 9 months old she became much more independent. While I sometimes would like her to cuddle more, I'm also glad that she's a confident secure pup in her own home. Personally, I view it just like I would with a child..better confident & independent, than clingy and neurotic. |
I wouldn't necessarily characterize being a lap dog as mutually exclusive to being independent. Cookie loves to lay on my lap, but she's not the kind of dog who follows me around all the time. She's perfectly content to play with her toys in the living room when I'm in the bedroom working on my computer, or to roll around in the grass and chase squirrels in the yard while I'm reading a book and enjoying the sunshine. Of course she often wants me to chase her around or throw her toys, and if she finds a stick in the backyard that she's really proud of she'll come over to show me. |
My Jilly, female, was a lapdog but my Tibbe, male, is more of a terrier who is on the go and has little time for cuddling UNLESS it's his idea. Then he becomes a lapdog. |
RAzzle is a foot dog lol. That is the prime place and my dogs vie for laying at my feet. I have large dogs and Razzle was raised around them. How-ever he did find out that Moms has a lovely lap, and sometimes when he wishes to, will jump up and either lay beside me on the chair, or climb into my lap. He is our only animal allowed up on the furniture - but not our bed -he sleeps in his crate most nights - unless hubby is away ;-) And Razzle is a male. He is just the right amount of lapdog for me! |
my Lola is not a lap dog and she is a yorkie mix, she is independent but also affectionate at the same time and likes to be near me a lot, but not on top of me. I had 4 full bred yorkies before her and they were all different. My last male yorkie would lay on my husband's lap when watching TV but never mine, yet was more attached to me emotionally. Both my sister's yorkies were and are total lap dogs, they would lay on just about any lap available, her first female was sort of mean but still a big lap dog, especially when it came to my mom. Her current female is very sweet but also pretty needy when it comes to wanting to always lay on a lap. To me while I think I would like Lola to lay on my lap, after about 5 min of it I am putting her on the couch next to me because it gets hot and she does not like it if a fidget. So I guess I am glad that Lola is affectionate but not obsessed with laying on my lap |
Nope, Jackson is NOT a cuddler. He will curl up in between my legs at night or lay against my back at night but in general he doesn't enjoy being on my lap, he doesn't like to be carried, etc. I find most terriers to be this way but of course you get the odd dog out that loves it. I think in general Yorkies tend to be more cuddly on average than other terriers. |
Bailee is very cuddly in the morning after she has gotten up, follows me around no matter where I go and in the evening will lay next to me (NOT on me) on the sofa when I watch tv. If I try to put her on my chest she will go off. We got her when she was 11 weeks |
I have 3 yorkies and they are all lap dog! If we sit they want on your lap or cuddle up close. Tatiana, who is now 14 months is my biggest snuggle bug! She requires attention and cuddles. Even when I am standing and talking or cooking at the stove she will talk to me to request me to hold her! I brought her home when she was 12 weeks and she is a girly girl! Teeka is more fickle but loves to cuddle next to you rather than on your lap. Max is a lap dog but more my husbands than mine. |
The 2 yorkies we've had in my life time were cuddly. The male loved to lay on my moms neck and pregnant belly, and my grandmom used to carry him around stuck in the top of her dress. I was fairly young when he died so I don't remember much. Lola usually likes to be on or next to someone. Unfortunately I can't let her lay on me very long because it hurts. She presses herself as close to me as possible instead or she lays on my mom's lap. She also likes to be held while I'm on the computer. It's funny, if I have her out for hours, especially if I've been carrying her, she'll spend most of the night under the table. |
1. Teddy is very much a cuddler and a true lap dog. He seems more attached than Toki (in a different way) and follows you everywhere and will always try to crawl into a lap to take a nap or just cuddle. Toki will sometimes lay in your lap but not usually. She is more independent and likes exploring or hanging out by herself. 2. Teddy is my first male dog and although he's more of a cuddler than Toki, I don't think the sex of the dog makes a difference as much as the personality. I will say that I've noticed that Toki is a lot more cuddlier with my BF than with me (she needs to remember that I'm the one who feeds her, grooms her, walks her, and take her out to potty! lol). Teddy is pretty much indiscriminate in terms of whose lap he's in. 3. Toki was 10 weeks old and Teddy was around 10 months old when I got them. |
I have 4 and some are more cuddly than others. Toby is my biggest lap dog. He's 9 years old and I got him at about 5 months. That dog would follow me anywhere. He's definitely a Momma's boy!;) Bear is 14 1/2. I got him at 9 weeks old and he's never been a big lap dog. He will lay near me but not usually on me. Haley will be 13 in a couple of months and I got her at 9 weeks old. She will cuddle as long as it's her idea. She'll jump on my lap and lick my face and then usually lay next to me. Lily is my 4 year old Yorkie Poodle mix. I've had her for about a year. I'm pretty sure she had been abused so she was pretty skittish at first but she's starting to come around. She'll sit on the back of the couch and tap me on the shoulder when she wants attention and she likes to sleep on my pillow at night. So I guess I have 1 out of 4 that is a true lap dog.:) |
I think it all just depends on the dog. Mine is female and loves to be cuddled unless she is angry or mad. She was 4 or 5 months old when I got her. You might want to look at adult dogs to get what you want whether it's a retired breeder or a rescue. If you do get a mix though please rescue one because reputable breeders don't breed mixes. |

This pretty much describes Joel. He'll lay against me but doesn't like to be in my actual arms. He rarely will sit on me, only when a weird person is around. Doesn't mean I don't hold him haha! |
I'd categorize Eddie as a lap dog. He sleeps right next to my wife, and he sits on my lap while we watch TV. Interestingly, Eddie was her dog. She researched the breed, found him and brought him home. But then I trained him and walked him and became his play buddy, and he wanted to start sleeping with me. My wife didn't get offended -- she just didn't allow it. When Eddie came over to my side of the bed, she grabbed him and brought him over next to her. I originally didn't think it would work, but now Eddie loves sleeping next to her, and he goes to her when he wants to cuddle. It was a win-win situation. He gives us both plenty of loving. Jillie, on the other hand, is more my dog, but she doesn't like to cuddle. She follows me everywhere, but she sleeps at my feet or on the ground. Go figure. When she cuddles, though, it's with my wife. |
Mine vary quite a bit Izzy and Elvis both came at the same time. Elvis was 5 and Izzy was 4. They had been in the same home since 8 weeks old. Elvis is a shoulder dog, not a lap dog. Izzy is still skittish unless you have her bag out. Then she follows me everywhere until I let her jump in the bag. My daughter says she looks like a whack a mole, ducking down inside whenever someone tries to touch her. Sebby is very timid but will sleep next to me, just not too close. He came from a puppy mill about a year ago and will probably never be a lap dog of any sort although he will now occasionally reach out and tap me to be petted. Piper is very active at 7 months. I've had her for about a month. She doesn't sit much with me but will sleep with me. Niko is my little shadow, following me everywhere but does run around outside with the big dogs. His favorite is my great dane Sage. I got Niko when he was 6 days old and bottle fed him (mom died due to poor breeding choices) so there is a wonderful bond between us. He doesn't think he's human, he knows he is. His favorite place is sleeping on my chest where he can give the occasional kiss. |
Charlie is a lapdog. Not all the time but he plops his butt on mine and his dads lap whenever he feels like it. That's one of the ways he greets us when we get back from being home and we sit down. lol I had him since he was able to leave the breeder. |
Galen is a snuggler lays on me when I am laying down.but also he loves to do zoomies. Loves to run around |
Prince is a lapdog when he wants to be....which is often(if my lap is available), but he doesn't mind laying next to me on the couch. He sometimes sleeps on my stomach in bed but often lays right below me. Ricky has turned into a huge lapdog. In fact, he is on my lap as we speak. If I am sitting down, he wants to be on my lap...which is probably why Prince sits on my lap less than he used to. He typically sleeps under the covers tucked in right next to me. I have about 1/4 of my bed to curl up in because the boys like to sleep close to me and it sandwiches me in. Ricky is by far my biggest snuggler. He loves to get kisses and he likes to be held like a baby and have his stomach rubbed. He doesn't get carried around much, but he doesn't mind it when I do carry him. He's not a lazy dog though, like Prince. Ricky likes to get his play on too!! |
Lap Dog?? Muahahahha... what is the opposite of a lap dog? well that would be Mike, I can't keep him in one spot for more than a few seconds, the only time he stays calm is when I brush him and bath him, other than that he just likes to jump, run and play with his toys all day long.... even after our daily walk (about 30 minutes walk), he is still a little bullet that runs around the bed, comes to kiss me, tease me, goes, runs around, hides, tries to tear his toys to pieces, jumps... and... repeat. Definitely not a lap dog, but he is just 14 weeks old, so that might change in the future???? |
My little 4 month old Gracie is a lap dog for sure. She seems to always want to be held when not running and playing. Love it! She is soooo sweet :) |
1. Josh is a lap dog. He loves to cuddle and give kisses. 2. No, I do not think the sex of the dog will make a difference. In my experience, calm dogs with baby like personalities make good lap dogs. I encouraged him to be a lap dog by making it a positive experience, and I held my dog often. Now he licks me when he wants to lie in my lap, and sometimes he climbs into my lap for cuddle time. 3. I think Josh was 12 weeks old. |

Dogs display their personality when you watch them play and interact with their littermates. Dogs' personality can change as they develop into an adult dog, but using this method has worked for me in picking docile dogs. All of my toy dogs were lap dogs. I groomed my dog to like the experience. I hope you find the right dog that matches your lifestyle. Good luck! |
Thanks for all the great feedback guys! I really appreciate it! |
My boys are cuddlers and lap dogs. Max was 13 weeks old when we brought him home. Teddy stayed with the breeder until he was 8 months. I believe we "trained" our boys to enjoy cuddling and lap time, not on purpose. I think the boys learned to use affection to butter us up to get what they want. :D They get really lovey close to meal time and walk time. They love massages, so they also come to us for that. My father taught Max to "kiss" when he was a pup. Teddy wasn't much of a hugger or kisser when he first came to us, but he followed Max's lead. We are super silly when we do these things with them and give them praise for it. Of course, everything has to be on their terms . . . and if something exciting presents itself, like a squirrel on the deck, the dogs are off like a shot. Best wishes in finding the right pet for you. |
Molli my yorkie is the opposite of a lap dog, she will cuddle when she has worn herself out lol. My boy Chibi is much more of a snuggle bug but he is mixed, I think he is yorkie /schnauzer. The only way you can be sure of the personality is to get an adult dog. Molli was so snugly and quiet as a puppy you would never guess she would be so energetic. Good luck! |
