Hyper!!!!! Gunner is 4 months old is so HYPER I don't know if this is normal? He runs around every where, bounces, and I'm also having a hard time getting him to stop biting when we are playing with him. The whole family plays with him a lot and he gets plenty of attention. He is very healthy and I'm thankful for that but just not sure if all this running around acting wild is normal or it's just puppy play. He plays with his toys too. I don't mind it but sometimes I think he has lost his mind. Any advice or answers would be really helpful. Also, he is my first Yorkie and I,m learning. :) |
Some Yorkies are really high energy. Puppies tend to be very active. For biting, there are many methods you can use to train him to stop. You can put a toy in front of him so that he aims for the toy. You can yip like a hurt dog when he bites you. If he is going for your hands, take your hands away. Fold your arms across your chest where he can't reach. Say "no bite'. When Max was a puppy, he liked to nip at my toes when we got out of bed. He slept in his xpen at the time. If he wouldn't stop nipping, I put him back in his xpen while I brushed my teeth. He learned that if he wanted his freedom in the morning, he had to stop nipping. When we played and he wouldn't stop biting (wouldn't respond to the other methods of discouraging it), then I would get up and walk away. Play time was over. The teething stage can be challenging. Make sure he has appropriate things to chew on. |
Well the hyper part is normal my 8 month old sushi practically runs up the walls, she's up and down form the couch at least 100 times a day. As for the bitting if you aquired him sooner than 12 weeks from the breeder, they need to stay with mother till 12 weeks to learn from mom to stop bitting. I have heard people having severe chewing and nipping problems from getting puppies before 12 weeks. You need to teach them stop and no. When they stop give a treat the sooner you nip this in the butt the better, in the long run. I usually tell mines quit it and she listens well because she wants a cookie in exchange. Mines loves this little ball they sell like at petsmart we fill it with peanut butter and freeze it and she plays with it for hours. Keeps her occupied. Good luck |
I raised 3 yorkie pups (not at one time lol all 3 years apart..all past now) Hyper as the day is long, that’s the breed. High energy dogs. Yep they zoom through the house, jump on furniture, fly off furniture, race through the house like wild stallion’s. Yes that is normal, and yes, you have a “normal” yorkie. As for the biting, when he bites you in a FIRM VOICE give command NO BITE, OR NO BITING (your choice) , The command word must be consistent either no bite, or no biting, Yorkies are a terrier breed, it takes a bit longer to train them, they are eager to please you, he will learn. You have a quirky, lil clown that will give you hours of entertainment. Enjoy that lil boy. |
Be sure to reward him with a 'Good boy' and a treat when he does things you like, like licking your hand and being calm, anything you would like to see him repeat! |
The yorkies in both my household and in my mom's have demonstrated a few patterns re: being hyper. On top of normal puppyhood hyper-ness, ours get predictably hyper following a bath at home (zoomies are prepared for by laying out towels for the racing, still-wet pups) and also right after eating certain foods. Could be the increase in blood sugar or it could be an allergy. For mine, I think it's blood sugar because one of my two is a picky eater and can allow himself to go too long between meals at times. My mom's pups, however, recently became much calmer after switching to grain-free food (Wellness). My mom's yorkie female was almost intolerably hyper and bite-y when she was very young. Thankfully, she's much improved at 17 months. A basic training course we took together helped as did her spay surgery. (Her shorkie, however, is still like a land shark with her ever-ready chompers.) |
