Friends, I'm at the point where banging my head against a wall would feel more productive than training my Yorkie Rex. I've read it all, tried it all, it seems like anyway! But I've made a promise to this puppy when I bought him for my son. I feel that a promise was made anyway. A union of this little puppy with my family. So I can't give up on him. I just don't know what else to do? Rex goes potty where ever he feels like. He does ALL his business ALL over my house!!! It's a constant battle. I "try" to train him and I clean up his messes, all day everyday Please HELP
Rex is my first dog, I've always had a cat. I lost my kitty after 18 wonderful years together. My baby boy needed a new friend not a replacement kitty. Sooo, we bought Rex! He's just as cute and sweet as he can be. But thinks my house is one big puppy pad:( | That is the one key to your problem!! A puppy in training should never have complete run of your house! He should never be out of your sight, so you can catch him BEFORE he does his business....if you have to leave him unwatched, he needs to be confined in a playpen or blocked off in a SMALL room where you have his bed, some toys, food and water, and puppy pee pads located. My puppies walk on entire surface of pee pads in their playpens....as they get older, I gradually start pulling one pad up at a time, which makes the potty area smaller...and by the time they are ready to go to new homes, they are pee pad trained. This is what you may have to do...put him in a small confined area, totally lined with pee pads.....in 3 weeks, take a pad up, leaving the potty area just a little smaller. Continue to remove a pad every 3-4 weeks, until you have him using just the one pad in the corner of the playpen/small room. When he is out with you during the day, make sure he is still confined to the area you are in....no running all over the house. You cant take your eyes off him, because you have to catch him when he starts exhibiting "go potty behavior", ir, circling, nose to floor....humped up back and tucked in butt,....you need to watch for him to do all the behaviors and grab him up and either go outside or to a pad with him when he starts doing that. He wont voluntarily remain on the pad, you have to stand there and be sure he stays there....he will probably forget about pottying for a couple of minutes and all this will need to be repeated....good luck....this is dooable, but it takes an IMMENSE amount of patience and perserverance....this is a test of wills...Yorkies are notorously stubborn, and you have to beat him at his own game. Fortunately, they adore making their humans happy and when he realizes how utterly, completely uncontrollably happy it makes you when he gets it right, (plus he gets a treat!), he will finally get it!!!! |
