How often does your pup go outside to potty?? How often does your pup go outside to go potty?? I am letting Prince out at least 15, maybe 20 times a day and he is still peeing in the house. Last night, I put him on my bed to go to sleep and I took off his diaper and walked it to the kitchen and when I came back, he had peed on Ricky's toy on my bed  I was gone for less than 30 seconds. I let him out whenever he wants to go out. At night, he usually goes a minimum of 2 times, sometimes 4 or 5 times on a bad night. He pees, poos, and even wants a midnight meal. He is peeing so much that I had his blood checked for diabetes, a UTI and kidney problems and his bloodwork came back fine. He is an older dog(10 years old) but is his CONSTANT potty breaks normal?? It's like he no longer has the ability to hold it and just goes whenever, wherever he wants. |
Well is he neutered? Not neutered dogs tend to mark everywhere like my male yorkie. I let them out 4-5 times a day but the male has a constant belly band in a house as to he is not fixed and used before for stud. I had a friend who had a dog 12 years old that couldn't hold pee or poo and she had to let him out frequently he was sick thou and was put down shortly after due to health issues. He might be getting to the point he's senior and needs frequent potty breaks. Might want to consider a doggy door if you have a fenced in yard or maybe pee pads for him since he can't hold it long. |
I'm glad he checked out fine with the vet. We use piddle pads, and Teddy pees on them for attention/rewards, so it hard to say how often he would really need to go. Max probably pees every 3 - 4 hours, and more often after something exciting like playing fetch or having the doorbell ring. I do recall our previous dogs, especially our Cockapoo, needing to go more frequently as they aged. Both dogs required medication for incontinence in their senior years. They were girls though, and I think this is more common in girls. |

Crystal lives in a top floor penthouse and only ever uses pee pads. She's really pretty good 99% of the time, with a true sense of respect and the decency to be a good shot in the bargain. Only once has she she conjured what her Belorussian mom describes as a 'papooshka' outside! Yesterday she went to the hairdressers and looked very worried when we collected her. A rather thuggish 'Westie', the size of a 6 month Panda Cub had been grizzling on at her about Scottish independence, through the bars of the neighbouring little cages, where they await collection. Being the canine version of a misanthrope, such events are most stressful especially when the neighbor had obviously been drinking too! Promptly upon coming home (something that couldn't come quick enough), we jumped on Mom's bed and had a squirt! She then took off to her little self imposed 'Jankers Cell' crate thingy, looking as shocked as we did. These random events are either after massive excitement, or being spooked by someone or something, that we can't comprehend, but respect. Normally she pees at regular intervals every 4-6 hours or so and is outstandingly puntilious with her late night micturition routine. |
I am wondering if it's possible to get mine into a routine of going every 4 hours instead of 1-2 times per hour. Sometimes he just goes outside for a sniff. Sometimes he just wants me to get off the couch and either a)get him a treat or b.)go to bed and he knows I'll get up if he goes to the door. I am wondering if I should start the whole potty training escapade over this spring with both of my boys using crates....or do you guys think it's too late?? BTW, Ricky will use potty pads, but Prince will not...at least not on a regular basis. I've caught him peeing on the pads, but I think it was only to mark over Ricky's pee...not because he knew the potty pad was the right place to go. Maybe it would be better to try to pee pad train him than re-train him to go outside....although I don't know if he'll ever be able to make sense of it all. In his mind...peeing on the pee pad and peeing in the house is all the same thing. I am pretty flustered at this point. He's got to wear a diaper 24/7 now because he's just freely peeing everywhere. |
Peek A Boo learned to use a pee pad at age 15 years! I caught him marking over one of the girls' pee spots on the pad and rewarded him and gave him a treat. I also put a 2L soda bottle filled with water in the center of the pad to give him something to lift his leg on. |
I guess on average it's about 4x a day. Jackson is 5, neutered, and 17lbs. He can hold it forever overnight. On weekends he often holds it from 11pm - noon the next day and is still not a hurry to rush outside when I finally let him out. So it's when we wake up (average 8:30/9am), and then usually again around 1pm. Then again around dinner time (5 pm or 6pm or so). And then before bed so anywhere from 10pm- midnight depending on when I need to be up the next AM. |
