Yorkie Puppy We have a Yorkie puppy, Bella, who is 3 months old and 3 lbs. I have a few questions for you veteran Yorkie owners: 1. At 3 lbs I am afraid of giving her flea-tick applications. All of them I have found are for at least 3 times her size. She is awfully little for such a potent mixture??? 2. She is in an eating spurt where her little belly blows up like a balloon. Can a puppy like this eat too much and will she get fat at such an early age? 3. How about this level of excitement she has? She goes ballistic first thin in the morning and when people come. Any good methods of calming her down other than chloroform? (just kidding) |
Hi and WELCOME to YT :)!!! Your Bella sounds adorable. Answers to your questions: 1. I won't answer this one since I don't use flea meds, but I'd def check w/ your vet 2. I wouldn't worry at all about her getting fat at this stage of life. But on the belly - is she just full or does she actually bloated? You don't want her bloating, as that's very uncomfortable. If it's bloating, I'd be wanting to change foods. 3. I recommend the chloroform :D. Kiddin'! It sounds like she gets what we call the "zoomies" in the morning, which I love watching..she's prob just getting some excess energy out. As far as people coming over, you prob do want to address it if she's getting way too excited , otherwise it may turn into a bad adult habit. Maybe try soothing her a bit when new people come over before turning her loose. That said, young puppies are just so excitable and it's part of their socialization to be like that, so you can only control it to a certain extent. |
You have a little one ... Enjoy As far as the flea control.... They say that its safe for pups but if you really want it ask your vet first If there are no fleas right now and your pup has no contact with other dogs I'd hold off on it for awhile As far as over eating ... Yes pups will eat until they burst So a good rule if thumb is about is a little less than a half a fist size for a meal The rambunctousness is all part of being Yorkie It tends to calm down as they are getting older If you need to stop your pup make a loud noise .. Clap or use a while It will get his attention long enough for you to redirect him |
They make a dosage of Revolution (topical for fleas, heartworms, and parasites) for puppies under 5 pounds. Our Bella uses it with no side effects. |
1. I WAS using Interceptor for heartworm before they discontinued it. Now I use Sentinel for heartworm which I believe includes med for fleas. If it's just a flea prevention you're looking for an not include tick, maybe Sentinel is something you can consider. 2. Is your puppy eating really fast? I think I read that might cause the tummy to bloat. 3. I think this is a matter of training of which I'm sure a lot of members can recommend. :) |
Ask your vet if you can split the flea med up mine let me do that when i had to put it on a kitten |
Dawn soap works really well for fleas just leave it in for a few minutes. Look online for natural flea remedies. Rosemary works vary well too and there's a lemon treatment. They wount hurt as to they are natural remedies. I did this with my nursing dog and 2 weeks old pup which weighs 1 pound. |
