What is more accurate? Growth chart or breeder?
 
Hello, I was just wondering which is more accurate, my breeder says my 13 week old baby will weigh 3 pounds full grown. She weighs 2 pounds today and according to the growth charts she should weigh 4 pounds. The breeder is very experienced (has been breeding for like 20 years), but anyone can make a mistake.

I don't have much experience but when I got Mike, the breeder told me he will be around 2.5 to 3 lbs... he is 13 weeks and days old and he weights 1.3 lbs as for yesterday when he got his 3rd set of shots.....

Chart says about the same thing.

Well my breeding mentor told me that at 6 weeks take the weight and double it take that number again and double it again. A Puppy weighing 1 pound at 6 weeks will be 4 pounds full grown. This is her way of doing it and she's been a breeder many years too. I looked online according to the yorkie growth chart it says 32oz @ 13 weeks = 4 pounds full grown all thou it depends some yorkies can eat more than others and be on the chubbier side. My boy was meant to be 4 1/2 pounds but he dirint go according to the breeder nor the growth chart he weighs 5 1/2 pounds at 2yrs. So go figure. Congratulations on your new baby enjoy him they grow up fast.

I know Gunner stayed pretty true to the weight chart. My breeder thought he would go 5 to 5 1/2 lbs. He isn't put on the weight, and I think he is slim. He is just under 5lbs now which puts him exactly what the weight chart predicted. I would love him to get to 5lbs or more.

I will say both the chart and my breeder were wrong lol...they both predicted Lilah would be around 6-7 lbs......it's looking like she may end up only 4 lbs (possibly 5).

No breeder can guarantee the size and I don't know any that will claim to...it's usually more of a guess based on current size, size of the pups from the previous litters etc

This is true I remember my breeder making me sign a contrat that sayed she dirint guarantee the size, color, or breeding quality. I guess there's never a for sure guess.

I totally agree that no breeder could predict the size of the adult dog. Could you imagine.... "I guarantee your dog will be 3 pounds full grown", then your dog gets 8 pounds and you try to get that guarantee. You gonna return your dog that you loved for a year?

Just to clarify the breeder isn't guaranteeing anything. She just told me how big she thought Lexi was going to get. :wink:
I am picking her up on Saturday and I am quite certain nothing short of death will be able to pry her from me! LOL
I would like for her to stay small (no negutive comments please, I know how so of you feel about "teacup" puppies) but even if she goes over the breed standard she will still be my princess! :lv32:

Well the breeding standards for yorkies is under 7 pounds. So there is no such thing as a tea cup, breeders just made up tea cup, micro, ext to sell for more money. Anything under 7 pounds is considered breeding standards for a yorkie. Some yorkies are over 7 pounds and they are still purebreed as to yorkies were breed larger many years ago for hunting mice. Anyways I don't think your baby will be too big I have a full grown at 5 pounds and believe me she looks so small and fragile to my eyes.

If it's the type of breeder that studies the lines and adult weights of the ancestors of the breeding pair, going back at least 5 generations, I'd say the breeders, but don't forget, "experience" doesn't mean she's through. I also don't think a good breeder would give you exact number, I think they would be more likely to give you a range. So in this case, I would say, the breeding charts are more likely to give you an correct estimate. How long have you had the pup and what did it weigh when you got it?
