Walking with my Chloe As the weather begins to warm up (it has to, doesn't it?) I look forward to being outside with my one year old Chloe. I need to shed the pounds I have gained during hibernation and would love to do it with my girl. Yesterday we walked almost 4 miles together. I wonder though how much is too much. I can walk a lot (when I work back up to running my distances will decrease). Chloe showed no signs of wearing out, but I don't want to push her little legs and joints more than I should. I know once it warms up, I will need to concern myself with hydration even more, but my concern now is not pushing her further than her little body should be. Any thoughts? |

Many dogs can walk and run for long distances - some people even bike with them. We used to take our Wylie running and he just loved it! It was so much fun. As long as she does okay at 4 miles, I wouldn't worry too much. Just be sure her knees are in good shape...ie, no luxating patella as is common in yorkies. |
Walking is fine. Running on pavement a lot, etc, is when you start to worry a bit about joints, but honestly if she's acting fine, I am sure she is. 4 miles is totally acceptable. My friends yorkies are 4lbs and 6lbs and frequently walk the 4 mile loop by their house. One has mild LP. The most I've walked with Jackson was 7 miles but he honestly would've gone longer if I did. lol. Walking is good for them (and us!) |
I start out with shorter walks and gradually work up to the longer distances. Helps to build up their muscles. |
