Getting My First Yorkie!
 

Good Morning!

So my Yorkie is not born yet and I will be getting her after around 8 weeks after she is born. Is there anything I should know about having a puppy that young? anything special I need to do? Ill take any advice!

To start off the puppy should stay with the mother till 12 weeks. Ask if the breeder did the genetic testing on the parents to see if your puppy will be healthy. This is what reputable breeders do.

FIRST;;;;make sure you have a good vet BEFORE YOU get this baby, as soon as you get the puppy bring it to the vet for check up ASAP. That is a MUST
You have to BABY PROOF your home. MEANING ::: remove anything a puppy can reach. They are like babies, EVERYTHING goes in their mouth, and they chew it. Even tho its just a baby, training starts immediately. Don't let that tiny lil face and those big eyes melt your heart to think they are to small to start training. They are like WILD CRITTERS it is up to us to humanize them lol. Early training is for their safety and your peace of mind. DO NOT THINK BECAUSE THEY ARE SO YOUNG, THEY ARE TO YOUNG TO LEARM:::WRONG These babies are smarter then you think lol The puppy first needs to be potty trained immediately, have a specified area where you will have a wee wee pad. This is the FIRST thing you MUST do, is to show puppy where he / she HAS to pee & poo. House training to pee & poo will take time, with all my yorkies it took about 3 weeks before all accidents stopped and they finally GOT IT. Buy lots of SAFE chewing toys. Puppy are teething and will chew furniture, walls, floor, anything and everything they can get their teeth on, crates are great, I never crated any of my pups because I always had a small out of the way area that was gated, but I am 100 % for crating. Training to not bite is another must, they have razor sharp (shark like teeth lol) Again do not think they are to small to learn these things, and do not let them melt your heart by you thinking scolding them will make them mad at you lol. I am going to start you off with this info. When other member wake up lol, you will have a WEALTH of knowledge to get you through this puppy stage. It's going to be a wonderful rewarding experience for both you and that wee, lil baby. Give it lots of attention and love (kinda silly for me to throw that in lol, ya just can't help but loving them up lol).....Yorkies are a GREAT breed, they are little clowns, very energetic, loving breed. Good luck, I know the waiting time to get this baby will seem like an eternity, but it gives you time to research the breed, and gather info on training a puppy. Always remember, having any pet in your life IS A LIFE TIME COMMITMENT. NOT A TOY TO PLAY WITH and when the novelty wears off pet gets neglected and maybe even gets removed from your life. Puppies, and adult dogs regardless of the breed is time consuming and WORK, it's just like having a baby or small child, they must always be watched, and most of all loved. If you are a committed animal LOVER this comes naturally. Keep us posted when you get your baby, come to YT for questions, BUT ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR VET ON MEDICAL ISSUES. I do not know where you have been getting your information. I have read that you can take the puppy from the mother at least 8 weeks. This breeder is a family that breeds as a hobby. So they do not need genetic testing.... They treat their pets very nice. I even have a link to an article saying its okay at 8 weeks
I have also had a puppy that has been 8 weeks old and they are just fine.... I just needed to know. How Yorkies act as puppies but I guess this is not the right website for me to get good information.

Hobby breeders are not always reputable.
REPUTABLE breeders do not allow their pups to leave at 8 weeks. They also do genetic testing on their dogs and puppies.

Larger dogs may be able to leave their mom at 8-10 weeks, but smaller dogs really do need to stay until they're 12 weeks old. They need the time with mom, the extra weight they'll gain, and also they are learning a lot in those 4 weeks.

Welcome I hope you enjoy your new puppy. One thing you have to watch for is hypoglycemia - low blood sugar. It is good to have some nutrical on hand and if your puppy shows signs to give it to them then follow it up by giving them a protein to eat

Welcome! Like others have said have nutrical on hand in case they get hypoglycemia. We got our yorkie from our breeder at 8 weeks. I know there are lots of people against getting them that young on this site but we did not have any issues and he is now almost 3 with no health issues at all.

Congrats on your soon to be puppy lol. Be sure to post pics whenever you get some. Breeders that are members of YTCA advocate keeping pups until at least 12 weeks...not all breeders are members and not all members are reputable. Different strokes different folks I think. Just make sure you're prepared whether you get him/her at 8 weeks or 12. I would have Nutrical, xpen, crate, pee pads, cat collar w/bell, good food (no fillers), good shampoo, brush/comb, toothbrush, water/food bowls, and please keep in contact with the breeder even after you get your puppy sometimes they can save you a vet visit. There are many breeders on this site who have been breeder for decades and will always recommend 10-12 weeks perhaps longer depending on the size of the pups.
There is some socializing they learn living in the pack longer and the aforementioned hypoglycemia is something to watch out for. Ask the breeder if her dogs have a history of heart issues or luxating patella and what her health guarantee is against. My breeder gave a five year health guarantee.
At 8 weeks I can't imagine the pup would have it's shots yet so you will need to get those at 9 weeks then 13 week and final at 17 weeks. Rabies I would recommend waiting until they are 6 months old.

Get lots of chew toys and things to keep their little brain stimulated or your furniture is toast, I really like nylabone toys, they are good and sturdy and won't hurt the teeth. Make sure your pup is eating 4 meals a day. Yorkies are wee cheeky monkeys and smart as a whip, so be on the ball for toilet training. It's about consistency and persistence.

Research your puppy foods, you want your baby on a really good one, the first few ingredients should be meats and fish, avoid anything that has rice corn soy wheat beet peas and too much chicken/turkey/meal. You want whole meats for proper proteins.

Don't let them climb, they have soft bones and could get really hurt (I'm sure you know that one already).
Everything out of the way they can chew. I'm trying to remember everything from when I first got Teegy, okay I can't think of any more right at this minute.

FYI we have had people come on here who's pups have been younger than yours and with the help of their vets and loads of love and care they have thrived. I took my boys to the vet within a couple of days of getting them for a full physical, stool sample and bloodwork. The vet will likely give you a dewormer, so ask your breeder if she has done this.
If your breeder is a decent person they will be there for you and only a call away for advice.
Here's something that happened with my second dog that did not happen with my first during teething. Tufty was really really sinusy. I talked to my vet on the phone and he said, just like babies while teething they can become congested and convinced me not to worry, I asked if I could give him a little liquid benadryl and he said it's likely not needed but a little drop isn't going to do any harm. I bought a load of essential oils and burned them at night while we slept in hope it would help clear his sinuses, I know gay, but I felt better doing it.
I kept the boys in their carrier secured on a chair by my bed while I slept so they could see me and did this for several weeks and had no problem with them sleeping through the night or crying. Get pet steps, I have one in the living room and one in the bedroom.

The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America which is the mother club of yorkies says pups should not come home before 12 weeks and a reputable breeder will not let there pups go before 12 weeks and they will also do Heath and genetic testing. Getting a puppy from a non reputable breeder means your much more likely to get a sick pup with genetic issues that might not show up for a few years but that will cost thousands of dollars.

There have also been people on here who go the pups to young and they didn't make it because of hypoglycemia issues or just being very sick. Also most of the people who come on here asking about biting problems got there pup to young.

You don't know where I've been getting my info? Look at all the other answers yorkies are vary small dogs and happen to get low blood sugar. If the pup is taken from mother too young you have a higher risk of loosing your pup. Btw this is the best sites to get info on yorkies. Many breeders on here happen to let there baby's nurse till 10 weeks. You obviously haven't read how much attention a 1-3 pound yorkie needs. They need to learn socialization till 12 weeks from mother. Some breeders even keep them longer if they are tiny. Yes they will thrive at 12 weeks but they still need mom from 8-12 weeks. Just because she is a hobby breeder you have a higher chance of having a pup down the line with multiple health issues because she dirint take the time to do the genetic. Also just because mom and dad are healthy dosent mean that when you mix both of there genes it will be the perfect match and have excellent pups. That's your call.
