Yorkie Rescue Question
 

Hi all,
I am considering a Yorkie rescue for the first time. I currently have a wonderful Yorkie who is 2.5 years old and have been considering getting another one. I've never adopted before and have a few questions.

Here is all I know. There are 10 Yorkies to adopt ranging in ages of 2.5-4 years old. They have not had any shots. They have been kept in a shed so not crates (not that this is any better). Apparently a breeder couldn't sell them and dumped them all. They are 100% Yorkie but breeder won't provide the paperwork.

I guess I should look for signs of mental wellness? Make sure they are social and come up to me to want to be loved? I guess I should look for clear eyes, pink gums and physical signs of limping or pain? I don't know anything else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The rescue place said maybe to bring my dog to see how he socializes with them but I'm concerned with them not having had any shots, my dog may contract something? My Yorkie is up to date on his shots.

It is 1.5 hour drive I have to make to see the rescues. If I see one I like, they will get the shots done and I reimburse them. They will then drive him/her to me to check out my home.

Any health guarantee?

You might be better getting a rescue from a well organized rescue that does health checks on their pups before they place them and have fostered the pups with folks who can tell you all about their temperment etc.

There are others here who have lots of rescue experience.

Sorry forgot the rescue group name; Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue in SC. They said I can bring back for any reason.

Most reputable rescues before placing the dogs will get them a vet check, get them all up to date on vaccines, and spay or neuter them.

Totally agree. Is the rescue going to do this?

Yes but I have to pay for it which I don't mind. I don't know if they do it automatically or wait to adopt out (which I hope is not the case).

When we get puppy mill dogs they MUST have a health check , have all their shots and be altered before they are even placed for adoption. Frequently we need to cut or even shave them down to check for skin issues. Ringworm is very common.There is usually an isolation period. Is this an organized rescue or just good people trying to help. Rehabbing a puppy mill dog is very rewarding but also a lot of work.There is no way that you can judge their personallity with a short or even long visit. Check out the thread on rescue forum. Just curious, did they tell you what there adoption fees are for the dogs? I visited their website and see that younger dogs are $400- $1,000 to adopt! Seems a bit on the high side to me. We rescued a 2 yo shorkie from Philly and paid $450, which I thought was high, but I think he would have been more like $700 from this rescue group.
