To those who have boys in a long coat (I'm looking at you Kristen) How do you keep the hair at the back of the saddle clean and pee free? Toto's coat is getting so nice and long, but everytime he lifts his leg the hair hangs down over the pee stream and gets nasty. Even if I use a baby wipe after his walks, I can still smell the urine. His entire belly is clipped short, only the hair from the top hangs down low. Now I have tried to put in a mini claw clip on each side to kind of "open the curtains". It kinda works, but the clips don't hold that well so a bunch of times during the walk he quits walking and I have to readjust. Next time I am going to try ponytails on each side but I want a quick solution I can do up in a few seconds before each walk. suggestions? |
Have you tried little girl hair clips? Snap right on and stay secure. What I need is a way to keep Elvis from peeing up his belly. He lifts his leg up and pees on his belly and chest. Thank goodness Niko still squats and Sebby has pretty good aim. |
Let a bit of hair grow from the tip of his boy bits. Experiment with the thickness and length of the strand you need. I kept Peek's at about 2-3 inches, then after potty, just wipe the strand with a baby wipe. It will cause the pee to follow that strand down to the ground and minimize what gets in the coat. |
You looking at me? What? :p Quote:
The pee string helps my keep my boys clean. We don't have to keep it as long as 3 inches. I have found that shorter works as well for us. Max and Teddy squat when using the pads, but are leg lifters outdoors. We have days where the boys get carried away and I have to do a quick wash from the waist down. |
Just like a man. . . . Get it all over ;) I agree. You need to experiment with the pee stream. Galen is a squater so he always gets his belly. I had to figure what works best. I found a thin, and shorter works for us. Good luck. I have to say that is the only thing I don't like about boys. |
Crazy Huey, who's coat is not far from hitting the floor, hikes so high that he almost falls over, so generally misses his coat. Our issue is he is so off balance from trying to pee a foot higher than he is tall that when he comes back down, he is off balance & many times steps in his puddle. :( |
I have always has females, so never had a pee pee prob. I had to put my last one down Oct.2013. I swore NO MORE DOGS. When its their time to go to rainbow bridge its to over whelming, to painful for me. The pain in my heart is to severe. 6 weeks after having to put my beautiful 16 y/o girl down, and 6 weeks of constant crying, 6 weeks of being 1000% alone, 6 weeks of total silence in my house that no longer felt like a HOME, I get a call from my vet, she tells me they just got a 2 y/o male, neutered, micro chipped, house broken in as a surrender, not abused. I told her no more dogs for me, I can't take loosing them, and besides I wouldn't want a male because they mark everything. She said since he was neutered he may not be a marker, she said some do, some don't after neutered. She said there is something about this dog that reminds me of your little girl, really I say, and what is that, my vet said it's the ears (my girl had BIG beautiful ears) I am still in doubt, for 6 weeks I was trying to adjust not ever having another dog, it's painful to loose them and painful to not have one in your life, I was battling with myself to get a rescue or not. My vet said just come in and him the dog. Confident it would be safe to just see it, out of respect for my vet for thinking of ME when this dog came in, I went for HER, knowing I would NEVER have a male dog (because of their marking everything) I saw him, he had beautiful ears and the sweetest face, I signed the adoption paper and home he came with me. I ADORE this little boy, he squats when he pees A BIGGG PLUS. So I do not have the pee pee issues you gals have. I had a friend that had a male, when he peed he actually stood on his FRONT LEGS and peed lol the funniest thing I ever saw. |
Yeah, I agree with the others, the pee string is what many show breeders do and this directs the hair away from the coat, no more dribbles! |
What is the pee string??? I've got a little guy in a longer coat and he's usually pretty good but once in a while he will pee on his hair...maybe a pee string would come in handy?!? |

Maybe I'm not explaining myself well. Toto does have a pee string. He lifts his right leg only so the hair on the right side of his saddle hangs down over the sides obviously when he is walking. That hair is still hanging down when he lifts his leg. No matter how long the pee string is, if that hair isn't pinned up or tied back the pee will hit it bc it's so long. I tried the little girl clips that I use on Unis hair but didn't work for toto. His hair is too thick, even with all his undersides cut short. The claw clips don't hold well. But if I get smaller claw clips, same problem, hair too thick. I could try ponytails but would take more than a few secs and dont want to make him wait if he needs to go pee badly. Can't use snap barrettes, the sound scares him, plus I pinched him once already. |

Attachment 396915 When I am trimming underneath or combing tangles, I use the long plastic spring "clamp" things that hairdressers use to section hair when cutting. The long ones hold a lot of hair. Clothes make things harder for us. They hold the hair toward the belly. |
Oh, I didn't even think of the hairdresser clamps! I think that will do the trick. I gotta go to the beauty supply store then. Nancy: He does hike his leg pretty high. Only the right one. Never hikes his left. In the house he uses the pad so I think he squats but I've never witnessed him in the act either. His crate is big, but only big enough for the pad, pet carrier (his house) and bed outside. Not really anything to aim at to lift his leg. Actually when outside, if he pees on the grass he squats. If on a tree or plant or wall he hikes. |
Oh geesh...and here I was thinking I was doing the right thing by shaving his penis. I do shave in front of it as well, but for some reason, he still pees on his stomach when he squats. Ricky doesn't lift his leg much, but when he does, he lifts it amazingly high....much higher than Prince does. I have had a problem with him peeing on his skirt hair when he's been wearing clothing. For some reason, it gets tucked into his clothing the wrong way. |
