Controversial Today? A blast from the past! Is it controversial today? Maybe! |
Sad to have dogs sitting in windows just waiting for just whoever has the $$$ to come in and take them home, whether they have the funds to get them vet care if ill/injured, will treat it for fleas or heartworm preventative or has no time for the dog and works day and night or loses interest in an impulse buy. The pet store never turns down a sale because a prospective buyer is unqualified and who just doesn't care if their dog is needing something. For all they know, that person is going to cage the dog 24/7 and forget to feed it some days. They never ask questions regarding the person's pet history, how the animal will live or do a thing to check on the buyer's worthiness for owning a dog. Never require a vet and other references Dogs are sentient, noble, loving and loyal animals that deserve so much more from their human than being stuck in a cage or backyard and allowed to visit the owner for two hours in the evening and then back to isolation. Occasionally and who knows how often, the dogs do wind up with responsible and loving owners and that's a true blessing but I wouldn't bet on it happening all that often. When that buyer leaves the store with that puppy, the person who wrote up the sale likely hasn't a worry in the world about the life that dog is going home to and the breeder has long forgotten about it. Just as bad is the greeder or petmill the dog in the window came from and how little they cared about its future to sell it to a petstore! It's a sad song to me, knowing what it can actually represent all along the way for the poor little dog. |
That's what I figured.... Such a happy song from our youth is now sad since we know more about "that doggie in the window." Brings up pet store, puppy mill, mistreatment, neglect.... |
Yes, we now know a lot more about what's behind and ahead of in the life of that little puppy in most cases. |
Years later, Patti Page re-recorded the song making changes to the lyrics. Patti Page dedicates song to homeless dogs - YouTube |

I love the new lyrics as well:) This is why we have so many members here on this website, either from past mistakes when purchasing a pup or just wanting to learn as much as they can to take care of the one they have. Knowledge is priceless when it comes to taking in an animal, that becomes family. I don't think any of us expect perfection since there is no such thing but I do want to know the reputation of the breeder and I will not purchase from a pet shop. A rescue could be a labor of love and oh so appreciated by the lucky animal. So many out there that need homes. |

My mother used to sing that song to me - grew up with it. So glad Ms. Page redid it - wish the petshops that buy from greeders and puppymills who breed any two dogs together despite medical problems each might have or their lines have, keeps their dogs caged and neglected, unloved and hopeless and sell dogs to anyone could be redone! |
