Where does your dog go to use the bathroom? Where does your dog go to do his business? I know it may be a silly question since most people would say outside, but since yorkies are small dogs, my puppy uses the wee wee pads. And since where I live it gets really cold in the winter and this entire season I've only been seeing snow on the floor like seriously everyday, I find the wee wee pads easier. He's been using them fine so far. But honestly, is allowing him to use that bathroom outside better? What do you guys think the pros and cons are of wee pads and outside training? Thanksss ;) |
On our front lawn..... 90 % of the time, else where in our yard 9 % and the remaining 1 % is on the walks.... he rarely goes #2 anywhere but at home. IDK why. |
Huey uses the outside deck (I know that sounds gross, but we don't have a fence & that is the only way I don't have to harness & leash him to go outside & I clean it after each "go"). He also uses potty pads inside when we are gone, and in inclement weather, you know, those days where he looks outside and says, h*** no, I'm not going out there, he goes into the basement/garage & does his business down there. He still has his "accidents", which I am sure are not accidental, but he has gotten a lot better. When he does make a tootsie roll inside, he will studiously ignore it, walking a wide berth around it & pretending it doesn't exist until someone picks it up. |
My yorkies go outside when the weather is nice, they are also trained on wee wee pads and will go there when they are home alone...they prefer outside, our weather here in CA has been nice though. They will not go outside in the rain...I love the convenience of the pads. |
Prince mostly goes on my front porch right now...yes, right in front of the mailbox and in our path of walking. In the summer, he will walk down the front porch to the sidewalk and go there. He hates the grass and thinks anything that is cement is fair game. Ricky, since winter has arrived, goes inside on a pee pad. He has become really good with his pee pad. The downside to this is that Prince now thinks the house is an acceptable place to go potty...anywhere in the house:( He doesn't poo much in the house, but he's peeing like a mad man and now wears belly bands a majority of the time. Prince used to pee in the house every time he'd get left alone and after I got Ricky, it stopped, but recently that has started again as well. I am constantly washing belly bands. It's gotten so bad that I even had him checked for diabetes and a UTI. I've cleaned the carpets numerous times and I use a carpet cleaner and a special pet carpet cleaning solution to clean all of the accidents up each time he goes and that hasn't helped. I am hoping that he will want to go back outside in the spring time. |
My boys use both pads and outdoors. Our house and yard are not the best for safely taking little dogs outdoors constantly, especially for the senior citizen (dad). We like the convenience of having the piddle pads. |
Callie won't go potty any where but outside. I wish she would use a potty patch or potty pad in the garage during snow storms, hurricanes, and bad thunderstorms but she seriously will not go anywhere but outside. |

I don't usually mind it. I prefer an outdoor trained dog as I find most pad dogs will always continue to have accidents, or mistaking rugs for pads, etc. It's just not my preference. But I admit it would be convenient in bad weather. |
Chewie goes on his "Potty Patch" on our patio since we live in an upstairs condo. I take him for walks and to the dog park but he will not go anywhere except for the patch and of course in the house. We're still working on potty training him. Interesting how he can hold it for 15 min walks and trips to the park but still have accidents in the house. lol |
Gizmo uses pads inside but also goes outside on his walks. We finally allowed him full run of both floors of the house about a month ago, and he had one accident on the carpet. I corrected him for that one at the time, and he's had no accidents at all since. Keeping my fingers crossed it continues because he's perfectly potty trained right now lol. Also now he's allowed upstairs on the carpeted part of our townhouse, he is getting to finally know the other 2 kitties :-) that is going better than I thought too, he's such a smart pup !!!! Our one cat Lucy is not happy at all about this situation though, as she feels the other kitties are going to steal her puppy lol. |
Indy right now is going on pee pads since he is so little but this spring I will train him to go outside |
My Gunner is confused. He started on pee pads but my husband said "no" and made me train him to go outside. He was doing pretty well with this, but when he learned to lift his leg all his training went out the window. I am now starting on square one again, taking him out stand there telling him to go potty and when he does we do the happy dance and give him a treat. I've also ordered belly bands since he doesn't care where he goes in the house. I'm hoping those will deter him to lift his leg till he is outside. |

Jess is a pee pad dog. We have one on all floors. she is pretty good with them 90% of the time. Its usually if we haven't cleaned them fast enough that she makes a little accident next to it. Funny thing yesterday she was outside for an hour and ran to the front door. I opened it and she ran inside to her potty pad! I kept telling her "go pee pee " outside but she wouldn't! |
Mine go outside, but they are also pee pad trained as well. |
ZoE is pad trained. For us it is best. I work multiple jobs and my schedule can be erratic. I don't expect myself to leave for work in the morning, and not use the bathroom at all, all day long, until I get home in the evening, and I don't expect ZoE to either. Personally, I think it's cruel to force a dog to hold it all day. Having the pads available to her whenever she needs them, just makes sense. Pad training also makes traveling easy. I've put a pad down in bathrooms, my kid's dorm room & apartment, and even in the open trunk of my car, and ZoE will go on it. And living in Michigan, with the horrendously snowy winters, I can't imagine using anything else. There is three feet of snow outside my back door right now and the temps have been below zero many days of the past few months. Who wants to be outside in that? |
Toby *was* 100% outside trained. He would stand at the gate and whine whenever he needed to go out. It *was* great. We would put his harness and leash on, take him outside and he would do his business. Then we brought Max home. Max is not trained at all--and now Toby isn't either. UGH! Max likes to go potty anywhere and everywhere--and at first his favorite place to potty was Toby's crate. We had to nix that one pretty quickly! ;) His least favorite way to potty? On a harness and leash in the yard. So now Toby has regressed and Max isn't trained. It is like having two toddlers in the house. |
Leo goes outside 90% of the time. I am 90% trained :( He is 25 weeks old, hardest dog I've ever trained. He will only use the pad if he is left in the x-pen for a few hours. I go out with him every time he goes out. We have a fenced yard ... but he can slip through, he's so tiny. I feel it's best I go out with him anyway, that way I can see what he's done :aimeeyork |
I have a Doggy Door out to a very secure area for my guys, and it's available to them almost 24/7. The only time they won't go out on their own is when it's raining, and then we put paper down right in front of the Door, and they use it. The minute it stops raining, they're out there ! |
wee pads are good but when you are home take them away |
Thanks everyone. Since its spring I'm going to train Mickey to use the yard and potty pads on rainy/snowy days. |
Outside on the lawn! We used pee pads when I first brought her home at 12 weeks, but started taking her outside about a week after I got her. Wanted her to get use to us first since her whole world changed. |
Cherry and Sammy go outside, but some mornings I find "presents" in my closet. |

Her ratio is almost perfect now and normally the errors are my fault, like when I forget to open the door to the Pee area. With laminate floors throughout now however its much easier to mop up these occasional mishaps. There are definite compensations though, as a comical little side-show ensues from these digressions. Adopting a pitifully pensive expression, she slinks around, nervously licking her lips looking for a hideaway :hide2: and then getting very excited when we are reduced to howling with laughter at these dramatic capers. Mostly, 'en toilette' she's very fussy and Irina cuts pads up so providing her with 'fresh surfaces' to address, otherwise alternate pastures are sought to bless! Sometimes during a brain storm of excitement, she'll rush in from her walk, considerately having a fast-forward leak on the way in! We are in a top floor apartment, living only 30 yards from the North Sea. So at my age and with the climate over here this winter, I've been happy to coalesce with her percentage's.:umbrella: |
If it's #1 Cookie will usually just go anywhere on the grass, or if it is raining or just rained heavily she'll pee on the back patio. But for #2 she almost always prefers one of the flower gardens in back, even if it's super muddy outside after a rain. She will not poop on the patio. |
100% outside, no matter the weather. He loves being outside. Winston has never gone potty inside, never, not once...since day one @ 8 weeks old. Bragging? Yes! Thank you very much... |
Lexi goes outside 100% of the time. If we are traveling, she may use a pad in the bathroom. She doesn't really care for being on a leash to go. We have an area that we made just for her. It is a little fenced spot right off our deck. I put a piece of outdoor carpet at the bottom of the stairs and this is where she pees mostly. She goes poo in a flower bed in the bark. On rainy days she may poo on the deck quickly so she can get out of the rain quickly. Kind of a princess. |
Joel goes only outside, front or back yard, no matter the weather. |
