Recommendations for training ? Hi new to group! We recently brought home our first yorkie, Turbo!!! I have wanted since I was a little girl! We are interested in obedience and skill training , any recommendations? Thanks for your time! |
Hi and congrats on your pup! After he has all his shots I would do a puppy class. You might could search google for all the areas that do puppy classes and go in and check them out and talk to the trainers. I would not use a place that required choke collars or even a regular collars because small dogs need to use harnesses when the leash is attached to them or they can get collapsing trachea. I think positive training is the best. When my yorkie was a pup we did the Petsmart puppy class and I was very happy with it but I know the trainers can be different at different places. |
Thank you! Pet smart is where I was going to begin appreciate insight regarding trainers... That makes sense! :-) |
I've had Gina at the local Pet Smart from the beginning, both trainers there are excellent, and also train service dogs, which is Gina's ultimate goal. I have been very happy with their training program, you might want to see if you can sit in on a training session, to see if you like the trainer and their training style. I know several big chain pet stores offer training as well, you might want to talk to the trainers at each place, and see who you like the best. Best of luck in your search. Puppy classes are great, but I wouldn't wait. I would start now at home. 15 mins a day can help you bond with your baby, and will give your puppy a great platform to build on in puppy class. I honestly think it's never too early to start. However, keep in mind that your baby may not get it quickly because of their age. I usually start immediately with all pups that come to my home. Even if they are only here for the weekend, the fosters leave at least knowing sit. :) |
Totally agree! Uni knew a bunch of tricks by the time she was about 4months old. We got her at 3 months. |

This was Jackson at 5 months, and I hate my voice in this video, lol, I was being way too repetitive (he had just learned 'bang bang' lOL), and also see how much I've improved as a trainer, but the point is, our bond was starting to form really well at this point and his little mind was working. :D This was in 2011, and I'm working on a new video because I REALLY need one, he knows so much more now, but training can be sooo much fun! |
