Having second thoughts....
 

about having bunjee neutered... he just had another set of shots yesterday and was so sore all over that he couldn't laydown comfortably without crying. i feel so bad for him.

i scheduled his last set of vaccinations and his neutering as well as removing his front dewclaws all at the same time. but with how he's feeling with just 3 shots at once, i'm totally having second thoughts about doing everything... i just feel so guilty of putting him through all of that pain... :(

i know i have to do it... but the guilt, oh the guilt!!!

You will be surprised how strong he will be...after a couple of days he will back to normal!! I was so scared before my girls spayed but was amazed at how fast they recovered...they both slept for a day and were back to doing everything within the week!! It is very scary but we are all here for you...

PErhaps - get his shots - and then the dew claws and neutering done at another visit.

Don't - not neuter him. I have had dew claws removed and neutering/spaying done on all my pets - they have never had a problem. They were quiet for a day or so (slept and rested a lot) and soon back to normal.

We had both boys done at the same time...they did great! Back to their old selves in less than a day......

thanks for the vote of confidence everyone. i guess i'm just being a worry wart (although i'm not the only one but my husband will never admit it ;) ). i just hate seeing my little baby in pain. at his last set of shots, i had requested a nurse hold him while the doctor gave the shots. he was yelping and struggling A LOT when the shots were administered and when it was over, he ran out of the nurse's arms and into mine and just whimpered. he's just a joy to me that it makes me feel so sad when he's crying in pain like that.

my vet actually recommended that we do the shots along with the neutering and declaws 'cause he was struggling so much at his last set of shots, having everything done all at once would be easier for him.

i'm hoping everything goes without a hitch and he heals quickly... any suggestions on how to make things more comfortable for him on the ride home and when he gets home?

I know you probably don't want to do anymore to him, but have all his baby teeth fallen out? Because you can get those pulled at the same time, that way you won't have to put him under again. I had Lucky neutered, baby teeth pulled, & his rabies shot all done at the same time. When I picked him up you never would've known he had anything done! He never acted any different! I was so happy! Just a suggestion though about the teeth. Good luck & I'm sure he will do just fine, probably better than you! :D :p

thanks for the suggestion. i thought about having his baby teeth extracted too but it's too early. his adult teeth have not yet started growing in. the vet say he prolly won't start losing his teeth at 6 months and he's only pushing 16 weeks right now. he'll be 18 weeks at time of neutering. i'm really keeping my fingers crossed that all his baby teeth will fall out naturally and he won't need to be put under again later on.

Your whimpering, whinning little dog sounds like mine. Only mine does all this before anyone has even touched him. He's a big boob!!!!

I took him to the vet for his shots and heard a lot of whinning and crying going on. The tech came out laughing. She said he didn't cry at all when he got the shots, but started in when another tech came in to bring him back to me (and he wasn't sore after his shots at all.)

Also - If I even touch my pup with the back of a comb (not even combing him) --- you'd think I was killing him.

I think some little Yorkies are just very VOCAL!!!!!

Grit your teeth and bear it. There are just some things that have to be done - like shots, etc. Pups are like little children. I have seen children scream their heads of -- or visit and tell jokes -- during the same procedure. Grownups too, now that I think of it!

You might think about getting him microchipped also while he's under. Won't hurt to have permanent identification in case he ever gets lost or stolen.

I am not trying to make you second guess yourself (it seems like you sort of already are) but it seems you may be rushing the neutering. It is usually recommended to wait until all of the adult teeth are in so any retained baby teeth can be pulled. Did someone tell you it is better for him for some reason to do it this early?

Also, the standard protocol for yorkies is not to give more than one vaccine at a time and to wait a few weeks, usually three, between each shot. To do a bunch of procedures all at once, especially vaccines with surgery...I don't think is a good idea at all. Most vets won't vaccinate at all if a dog is sick or compromised in any way with an injury so why would it be okay to give a rabies or any other vaccine at the same time as major surgery. He is already going to be feeling bad from the surgery...it seems almost cruel to add insult to injury and pull his teeth, remove his dew claws, insert a microchip and give him his vaccines too!!

He is way too young for rabies too I think. They usually recommend waiting until they are at least a year old.

I admit that I am not a big fan of neutering or vaccinations but I am really not trying to cahnge your mind if it is made up, and you have explored other alternatives and done your research and are happy that you are making an educated decision on what is right for your baby and not some "standard" schedule that your vet recommends for every dog.

Is he doing the laser surgery to neuter and did you discuss vasectony instead of a complete neutering depending upon what your reasons are for deciding to neuter?

I am not trying to confuse you but I wish someone had told me all of these things before I had Buddha neutered because, while he did fine, I still feel that I shouldn't have done it. He still marks and he "does it" with his Sheila Bear at least once a day....lol...and I am worried about the research I am reading about certain diseases and maladies that neutered dogs get that intact ones don't. All my vet told me was that he wouldn't get testicular cancer. Come to find out testicular cancer is very rare and if they get it, the cure is to neuter then. The survival rate is very high.

I know you are getting lots of good advice and you will make the right informed decision.

I had both of my boys neutered and had no problems- I did wait until they were older as Max had problems with baby teeth that needed to be pulled-
Both did very well and I too think you have to do what you are comfortable with- good luck to you-

I had Peawee neutered and his baby teeth taken out on the same day and he did great. He slept most of the day, but by the next he was back to his usual self. I don't regret getting the procedures done at the same time. I was more worried about if I didn't and every time he would go to the vet and something happened to him he would be afraid to keep going.

He was a little sore for all of about 4 hours and then he was back to his old self. I had to keep him on my bed with a leash so he would keep still. The shots seemed harder on him then getting neutered LOL.
