4 month old puppy - dry heaving/hiccup noise. I have a 4 month old yorkie. She is normally very hyper, very active, wants to run around 24/7. Tonight she was running around playing with my sister's dog. She seemed to get tired quickly, and went and laid on the couch. Next thing I know, one of my sisters is shouting, "She's gagging! She's gonna throw up!" I ran in to get her, she was making a noise that I can best describe as a continuous hiccup noise, but her body was convulsing as if she was trying to puke, and it is very similar to the noise she makes when she actually vomits (which she did a few nights ago, and that's why my sister assumed she was going to vomit again.) I sat her on the kitchen floor and pet her to calm her down. I checked her throat to make sure she wasn't choking on anything, but it saw/felt clear. The noise and convulsions would stop, but then start again within a few minutes. Then stop, then start again. I gave her some water and it seemed to help a bit, but then 10 minutes later she did it again, and then once more before it stopped. Then she just laid on the floor. She felt limp and just not herself at all. Very scary. She wasn't responding when I would talk to her, she just seemed to be in a state of confusion. She laid in my lap for another 30-45 minutes. I gave her a treat after that, some more water, and a little food. She came back out to the living room and fell back asleep for 30 more minutes or so. Then she woke up and ran around the house like her normal self for about 20 minutes. We went outside for her to potty, came back in and she has been running around fine since. I have no idea what is going on. I have a vet appointment for her tomorrow already for a round of shots, so figure I will discuss this more when I get there, but am looking for any more insight. She has lost 4 puppy teeth in these past few days, and she's been stubborn ever since the episode tonight so I haven't been able to see if she's lost any more, but she has been swallowing them all before I realize they've been lost and I'm wondering if perhaps she didn't choke on a tooth and get it lodged in there by chance and that's what happened? I also didn't know with how lethargic she was being if perhaps it was hypoglycemia or something, so I gave her a bit of corn syrup & nutrical. She is 4 months old and 8.5 pounds. She has been a pretty rough, tough gal up until tonight, and I just don't know what was wrong. :( I'm hoping it was a one time thing, but have so many different worries running through my mind now of what could be going on! :( |
Im really not one to answer as this is all new to me to. First thing I wondered about however is hypoglycemia, but I have never experienced that as of yet( knock on wood/ I hope I never do.) My pup is only 8 weeks old so I constantly worry about that. My thoughts and prayers with you. I hope shes ok. Poor baby. |
I wonder if she was having a reverse sneezing/breathing attack...do you know what those are? Check out this thread and the videos to see if it sounds like this: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...d-trachea.html I'm also a bit concerned that she could have kennel cough. Did you get her the kennel cough vaccine? Bc if you get the vaccine, it can actually cause her to get kennel cough. The last thing that came to mind is whether or not she had an incident of refux while playing...I think this would be unusual in such a young pup unless perhaps there was something wrong structurally w/ her soft palate. |
