Greetings from a new yorkie/dachsund mommy So, I've got a dorkie (although I don't think that's a very nice name, apparently that is what a yorkie/dacshund mix is called). Her name is Sadie, and she is 5 years old. I have taken her out 3 times so far today to pee, and she has gone each time (about 2 to 2.5 hours apart each time). I am going to take her out before bedtime, of course, but am wondering how good a dorkie is at holding it all night. We go to bed early at 7:30pm because hubby is on first shift and we are up at 3:30am. I would be able to run her out then if she needed it. Can she comfortably go 8 hours at night without peeing? I do have a doggie pad set up in a little cat litter pan by the door. No cat litter, just the pan with the pad. This is my first dog (before apartment living didn't allow for a dog in our area), and she was previously owned by an elderly person, I believe. She was surrendered last month to our local shelter and I just found her today. She's settling into our house quite well. Already snoozing away in dad's chair quite comfortably, and loves sitting on laps. Doesn't bother our cats but the cats aren't quite sure about her yet and therefore hiding out in my oldest son's large bedroom. I welcome any advice, tidbits. |
Hi and WELCOME! Your kiddo sounds precious; and bless your heart for adopting her and saving her from the shelter. It's hard to say if she can hold it, it will probably be found out by trial and error. Some can hold it, some don't. As long as there is a pee pad available and she knows to use it, you should be covered. |
Thanks, Wylie's Mom! your little guy looks so cute! we did survive our first night last night, but my little girl woke me at 10:30pm and again at 2:30am to go potty. she hasn't ever used doggy pads, I don't think, and at this early stage, at least, hasn't gotten used to them. but she is very good, goes just outside the door, gets down to business and turns around to go back in. so, based on last night's experiences, I know that she can go 4 hours, which means today I am working to get her on an "every 4 hours" schedule. get her regulated so that I can just set the alarm clock at night to get up and pop out and know that she will go. :-) she's already all settled in here, and doesn't need to follow mom all over the house because she worries that I am going to disappear. next week, it is vet and groomers for her. I figure a week is good to give her time to get settled in before upheaving her routine a bit with trips to places where she gets poked and scrubbed, etc. LOL |
Welcome to yt. Sounds like your getting her figures out. I would bet in time she will sleep the night without having to go out. |
