First vaccination shots Tuesday So Today Athena is 8 weeks old and next Tuesday she has her first vaccination appointment. It's certainly not the first time I have taken a puppy in for vaccinations, so I'm not someone that knows nothing of what I am doing here. However it is my first little yorkie puppy. Also, no matter how many times you have done something, that doesnt mean there aren't things, new or old, you dont know and still have to learn. SOOOO if there are any words of advice, warnings or other such what not, please do so now before I take her in. I want to be as prepared as possible. :) |
Ideally, wait until she's 12 weeks old (keep her isolated till then) then do 1 DHPP, and another 4 weeks later, then Rabies at 6 months, then at 1 yr old, do 1 DHPP, then 1 month later, a Rabies booster. At 12 weeks of age, I think 90% of all puppies have lost their maternal antibodies, so the vaccine will do it's job. Two vaccines after the age of 12 weeks is what is necessary to establish immunity, then boosters at 1 Yr old, and at that point may be protected for life. Check your state laws about vaccine requirements. |

I keep her in the house, but parvo can be brought in on almost anything. shoes, pants, other pets fur from being outside. so even if I dont let her out, it can still get into her no matter how careful I am. Shes not my only pet. My other dogs are vaccinated, but that doesnt mean they cant carry it on them. Edited to add that my husband works at a facility that has live pigs on it. just all sorts of stuff I worry about could be brought home on his clothing as well. |
If parvo is a concern, just do parvo 1st & wait until she's 9-10 weeks old to do everything else. But I'm not sure if most vets just have the parvo shot? Jean Dodds, DVM Hi Stephanie, I have heard Dr. Dodds say you can vaccinate at 6 weeks for Parvo alone and then follow the regular 9 and 14 week protocol with DPV. You might want to go into the breeders section and ask when they do first shots and what shots they do. We have some really great breeders on here and that might help you. |

I agree with KJC about waiting on the rabies vaccine. When I brought Max at 13 weeks to the vet for his last set of puppy shots, the vet gave him absolutely everything. Thankfully Max is a big, sturdy boy and handled it with no problem. I would never allow it again. Best wishes for Athena. |
