Need reassurance.... I made Tatiana's appointment to get her spayed....March 12! I know this needs to be done and she will be almost 15 months by then, but I have so many fears! I have talked to the vets about her size and they have done smaller ( can't imagine) than Tatiana. She is not quite 3 pounds. She still has some hypoglycemic episodes, which I feed her right away when she begins shaking for no reason! I don't like that she has to go so long without food. I don't want to leave her there as she gets so upset without me around! I am just worried sick and don't want to have her spayed..... Please help ease my fears! |
Awww, I know how you feel - you're not alone. It's SO scary to put them under, even more so when they're extra small. My Marcel was neutered when he was just 3lbs and he did amazing! Your girl is strong and healthy, and she will do *great*! Since she gets hypo, can you request that they do her as the first surgery of the morning? (PS. My precious Marcel is in today, it just so happens, for a dental and some other stuff, so he is under as we speak. I was THIS CLOSE to canceling the appt bc I just could not stand the thought of him under. But I know it had to be done.) |

They said they would give her some fluids with sugar to keep her from becoming hypoglycemic! |
Kyra was not yet 3lbs at a year old when she was done and I like you was very concerned. She did great though. She was very wabbely on her feet for a few hours after she came home but was better the next morning. Be sure and get a blood panel done on her first if you can. Praying for your girl. |

Oh no, March 12 is a whole month away. You'll have to take the advice of all of us & trust your vet. Dolly was young-maybe 8 mo.-& under 3 lbs. when she had it done & she came out of it fine. Good luck to you & rest easy for the next month. |

Soooo, the question here is whether you really want/need her to be spayed. I see you have other pups - any males in the pack - pregnancy issue - she is really small for that to occur! I think you have to wrestle with that question first, and decide it it is necessary. My Cali was tiny when she was spayed, but it was necessary because she was way too small for there to be the risk of an accidental pregnancy even though there were no other dogs in the house. I felt the pregnancy and the risk of cancer was greater than the chance of problems with spay. Maybe you need to come to a comfortable place with that. That being said I have to tell you I stayed at the vet's all day the day she was spayed - they even put me in an office that had a couch because they knew I was not leaving :D. And, as they had assured me, all went well, in fact when she came home she plowed right into her favorite toy and wanted to play:eek: Will be thinking of you folks on the 12th :) |

Reinforce with your vet's office the low blood sugar issue, and as Ann suggested, talk to them about doing surgery first thing in the morning. I understand about the separation anxiety too. Max I don't worry about, but Teddy is more sensitive. Luckily our vet's office does dentals first thing, so he won't have to wait around too long. |
I think we all hate to have our little ones go under. When Zoey had her dental I told the vet that of she doesn't eat within 30 mins after waking she throws up bile. He said I could give her a small amount of nutrical which I did. I wish the best for you next mo. I too, would be worried. |

I just got my boys dentals done yesterday and was a nervous wreck. After I dropped them off, I wanted to go back and get them so bad...and all kinds of horrible thoughts were going through my head...especially about my older one. Now that it's over, I can breathe again. I basically had to come to terms with doing it. I did everything I could do to prepare and make sure they had the best chance of coming through surgery ok(pre op blood work, asking for fluids, pre-surgery antibiotics etc etc) and I left it in Gods hands. |
