Another Floppy ear question I know there are a lot of threads on this subject, but I didnt find an answer to this specific question. Athena is 7 weeks old, but still cutting her first teeth. Her ears are still floppy. I have read on other threads that it is normal for them to be floppy when teething. So I am not concerned about it, not yet anyway. truthfully even if they stayed floppy I wouldnt be upset about it, shes adorable either way,but would like to try to get them to stand up if i can. So my question....I have seen many post about shaving the ears. Is that something that I should go ahead and do? Or should I wait until after she is teething an see if they stand up without shaving? I dont want to wait too long and have that hinder it somehow. |
I wouldn't wouldn't do much to her ears until she's like 10/12 weeks old. Then you can shave/tape or whatever but usually rise between 12weeks to like before 6months. And the teething most people are talking about when the adult teeth come in. At 7 weeks I'd guess Athena's is from her baby teeth coming in, you still have another round to go. >.< |

Well some pups ears do stand up on their own before then, I just meant it's not something to worry yourself over until she's at least 10 -12 weeks. You'll see them start to perk up. =] Someone who breeds yorkies might be better at answering if they shaved the ears that young so the ears would be up at younger age. Dracos came up at around 10weeks, I shaved them and gave him cottage cheese. And I don't think I've heard much about the baby teeth and people worrying about the ears, it's always the second set coming in that I hear about. Draco's ears didn't go down with teething when his big teeth came in. |
Bella's ears didn't stand until 6 to 7 months of age. I didn't do any taping or shaving. |

You should definitely start trimming the hair on her ears. If you don't have a shaver you can use a very small pair of scissors to carefully remove the hair off the sides and the tips of the ears. You can also rub and massage them when you are holding her. When they are teething the ears will go up and down. You can add 1/4 teaspoon of Knox Unflavored Gelatin to her food. That will help the ears stand also. You can get the unflavored gelatin at Wal-mart in the section where they sell Jello. |
[QUOTE=r-teddy]ok. I wont be concerned then. what is the cottage cheese for? I give her yogurt mixed in her food now. /QUOTE] I heard yogurt too, cottage cheese was just one of those things I saw people recommend when it comes to getting the ears to stand. Something about the calcium in it helping them stand. And have also heard of gelatin like bjh said. |
Ok thanks for the advice everyone! |

Ok this might sound like a really stupid question, but I dont want to make any mistakes by assuming. do you mean just add the gelatin powder to her food, or actually make the gelatin / jello and then add it. I assuming just the powder, but again. I dont like to just assume. |

Maverick's have always been pretty floppy but gradually began lifting up over time. I got home from a volleyball tourney with my daughter today, and one ear had come up fully. I never taped, but tried to trim them maybe once a month. He didn't care for it, so it had to be quick and not perfect. You can see the pic from today in my post in the Yorkie Nursery. Looks like the other should come up soon. I didn't feed him anything special other than his kibble, treats, and puppy vitamins. Good luck!! |

I'm not going to tape but will trim the edges and shave the inner tip. There is not enough hair there to shave or trim right now. |
I shouldn't worry too much. My girl's ears only stood up when she was about 6 months old! We were just like you endless on ideas until we cam across somebody saying massage their ears morning and night. It worked a treat and within 2 nights they were standing fully up by themselves :) |
