Problems with biting anyone?? We recently lost our sweet Sophie because she was hit by a car:'( She always wanted to bite. It was usually playful but constant. We now have sweet little Elliott:) But we are noticing along with being super hyper, he likes to bite too! Is this normal yorkie behavior? What's the best way to keep him from doing it? Thanks! |
Logan bites... TOO often. I'm wondering the same thing! He's 14 weeks old tomorrow. I'd say when he was about 11 weeks he just started biting hands constantly and the bottom of my pants whenever I walk anywhere. I just ignore it and give him a toy or when hes in my lap or on the couch with me, biting, I'll hold a bully stick for him to chew on. It keeps him occupied. I tried buying that "Fooey" stuff (a bitter spray that is supposed to deter them from chewing) and let me tell you......... it did NOT work and I think he ENJOYED the taste! Not going to lie... I tried tasting it myself before I sprayed it on anything. I wanted to know what I was putting him through I guess, lol, and it was BITTTTER! It's made from grapefruit skin, or something like that. I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth for at least an hour and I barely licked it. (I know, It's gross haha! But morbid curiosity... lol) But yeah if you find a cure for biting, please share! My only method now is re-direction. Giving him a toy or something he's allowed to chew. But he gets bored with it quickly and comes back for the hands or feet :aimeeyork |
Also, I'm sorry about your baby. I worry so much about Logan getting out of the house for that very reason. I really need to train him to stay away from the door. We live in the city :/ |
Thank you! I'm glad to know Atleast we aren't alone! Lol. And I have heard about the biter spray but if it won't work, what's the point? Elliott bites toes, face, fingers, my pants, whatever! Lol. We try to hold his mouth shut for a min and tell him no! But it never worked with Sophie so I was hoping for another deterrent:) And thanks, it was super hard when she got killed, heartbreaking. And we live in the country! It can happen anywhere:/ But Elliott is helping our hearts to mend:) |
I'm really sorry about your baby Sophie, it's really heartbreaking when a little one leaves us way too soon. Hopefully you don't have to ever go through that again and have taken the precautions needed so it doesn't. And it just sounds like basic puppy behavior with Elliot, but it should definitely be corrected. You have to be consistent. When ever he bites just snatch your hand away and say "No Bite" you can then give him his toy to chew on instead or stop playing with him for a moment before starting again. Just be consistent and make sure everyone in the house hold is saying/doing the same thing when he does bite. |
Biting My Isabella loved to bite me and just about everything else. She is now about 4 months old and has just about stopped biting me. Every time she bit me I would reprimand her verbally and stern "no biting mama " and give her a toy! As for biting furniture and woodwork I sprayed it with white vinegar! So far so good! Now if I could just break her of pulling my hair! :) |

I have Oliver for only 5 days now and he's the most quiet and chill 16 months old pup. One of the bad habits he has is biting. When I come home from work, he would jump on me and start nipping my hands and face. Even though it doesn't hurt, every time he does it I tell him "no teeth" "no biting" and "kisses only". If he ignores the command and continue, I would leave him alone for a few minutes.l so he knows I don't approve that behavior. If he give me kisses (aka only licking) then I would tell him "good boy" and "I love you too" and pet him. Too bad I haven't found a treat he loves yet or else I would give him a treat too. So far he has shown sign of improvement, less biting and when he does, he respond to my "no teeth" faster. But of course he's too excited to to see me to even her what I say, haha. |
Its good to nip biting in the butt right away. There are many ways to do that the only one that worked for me with my yorkie is saying no and squirting her once with a water bottle it doesn't hurt them but it gets them to realize its wrong. We tried a can of coins and now she is terrified of loud noises and I read an article in dog fancy that, that can happen with the coin method. It also might be good to have chew toys for them to chew on. |
Gracie is 12 weeks old and has been using her sharp little teeth in play for about 2 weeks now and OUCH!! Vet tips and it works for sure and doesn't hurt her: Command is "No Bite" and you place a thumb on the upper portion of her mouth and a finger on her nose and squeeze gently while saying it OR you can squeeze --gently-- the side of her mouth (upper lip is chubbier and easier to do) and say "No Bite". We are told that this correction at the "scene of the crime" (being the teeth/mouth) is all that will really work. She did not respond to the water bottle for anything we tried it for so that went to the wayside. I also find that loud noises don't bother her as long as they are "normal" noises and I don't react in a startled way (like vacuum, siren, hammering, compressor, something heavy falling on floor etc) |
