ROMAIOS - my beloved Yorkie M Hi there I am Antonis and I am a new member of the forum. I am the owner of a most adorable 13 month old male Yorkie. His name is ROMAIOS. The family enjoys being with the ROMAIOS and him too however we have two little(!) problems. First he behaves miserably when left alone in the house (he may cry for hours until somebody is back!). Second and most important he refuses to eat his Royal Cannin dry food anymore and insists on family home food. The vet does not give us a clear safe method to follow so that we can turn him back to Royal Cannin dry food. Any advise on these two issues will be appreciated |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Sounds like he may have Separation Anxiety. Have you tried leaving the radio or TV on for him when you leave? Add some Royal Canin to the homecooked food, and gradually over two weeks or so, add more and more of the RC and less homecooking. Only feed him his dinner in his food bowl, no scraps from the table, and any treats away from the table. Do not give him any table food after the switch is made, except for some yogurt or cottage cheese (can top his food to entice him to eat). Keep us posted on his progress! |
You could try Royal Canin canned food. My Zoey eats the canned RC and she loves it. She also get the RC kibble for her evening meal. |

I would suggest finding a puppy food that actually has meat in it. Even Walmart has a brand with better ingredients than royal canin. Nothing wrong with feeding him unseasoned gently cooked meats and organs, no veg though. Scramble an egg in a dry pan if you like. Stay away from starches, as a raw feeder I'd suggest trying to go in that direction, many people just can't seem to bring themselves to doing it over fear of germs etc., but I most definitely highly recommend it over Royal Canin every day of the week. I recommend with him starting to snub his food that you take the opportunity to research feeding options |
I too, recommend raw food. Zoey had been on raw for almost four years and had two episodes on pancreatitis. It was the treats that were too high in fat content that caused the problem but the vet put her on RC Gastro low fat food. I agree that the ingredients are crappy but she is doing well on it and she likes it. |
