Silky Yorkie? So apparently my Athena is a Silky yorkie, and that is different from a regular yorkie. I have been looking it up. Apparently she will get a bit bigger, which explains the growth chart. I went to the growth chart linked in one of the forums here an Athena weighed 30.72 OZ at five weeks, which wasnt even on the chart for that age. They didnt show 32 OZ until I believe 8 weeks I think it was. In any case, I found a different growth chart and it said she should grow to be about 10 pounds as an adult. |

But yes size is not an indicator at all. A Silky Terrier and a Yorkshire Terrier are different breeds. A Yorkie with a silky coat is just a description, but when you say Silky Terrier, you're talking bout a different breed lol. Get it? I know, confusing. You could have a 7lb purebred Silky and a 15lb purebred Yorkie... it happens. Size is not the only indicator of breed type. I did not get my Jackson from a good breeder (simply a classifieds ad out of the newspaper). I often think he is a Silky... he's longer than he is tall, he's 17lbs, his nose is longer, ears are bigger, and he honestly matches descriptions of Silky's more often than not. He doesn't really 'act' like most Yorkies I know. BUT... odds really are that he's a Yorkie. Just a badly bred one. Silky's are much more rare in the States. And puppy millers and bad breeders haven't got their hands on Silky's the way that they have for Yorkies which is why you get so many out of standard Yorkies that all look different. A wellbred Yorkie and a wellbred Silky are actually very easy to tell apart. Here is a comparison of 3 similar terrier breeds, the Silky, the Yorkshire and the Australian. Brit, this was a great comparison chart. I agree with you about Jackson. He almost looks like a mix of yorkie/silky. You could do a DNA on him if you really want to know. He is one handsome guy and smart too. |
Brit excellent explanation |

Well both of her parents are yorkies ( what ever kind ). I saw them both and have for years. But I dont have papers. If they are mixed, cant tell by looking at them. My friend that I got her from said the mother had papers, but she never sent for the ones for Daddy. I wasnt concerned about it. I wont be breeding her nor showing her. My friend may have said silky coated yorkie and I just didnt remember. |

What ever he is, he is cute as can be. You can just "SEE" his personality in that face. |

Things can go wrong real quick when you have people breeding dogs and not doing health testing, paying attention to lineage, etc. For example the 'founder sire' of Yorkies, Huddersfeld Ben, was actually a larger Yorkie, but he tended to produce small puppies. So big Yorkies can happen real quickly if people aren't paying attention and just breeding willy nilly without knowing anything about the dogs history and ancestry. Jackson's parents were 7lbs and 8lbs according to the 'breeder' (I only met the mother) and he's 17lbs.:p But yes ultimately a Silky was a mix of the Australian Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier. Bred for the beautiful coat of a Yorkie, but a large more robust terrier such as the Aussie. Quote:

Yeah realized after your first post there wasnt different breeds amongst yorkies. A yorkie is a yorkie. I was just trying to be silly when I said ( whatever kind ) . Seh probably was just using the "silky" as a description , like if she was saying soft, or fuzzy or what have you. But me not being that overly kowledged of the breed, got confused, especailly when I saw the weight difference. I now understand taht however, this doesnt mean she isnt a yorkie. Thank you. Honestly even if she does turn out to be something else, a Silky terrier or what have you, thats fine with me. still love my baby. Both her parents look the same as most of the Yorkies I see posted on here however, so im sure she is. Plus this was a friend of mine. I do not think she would be dishonest with me. If they are mixed, then she doesnt know it either. I could see where some people might get upset after paying a lot of money for them, if it wasnt what they thought it was. but tahts not the case with me. I didnt buy Athena. Her mother was killed in an accident and my friend had 8 puppies to take care of. she asked trusted friends whom she knew took good care of their pets to take some on. she just couldn't do it on her own as she was in that accident as well an seriously injured. It was more important to her they be well taken care of, then that she get money for them. We have been friends for years. I took Athena. My friend kept one other girl, a daughter of her beloved she lost. The rest have good homes now as well. |

WEll as I said in another post, she said the mother had papers, but that she never sent for the fathers. Whether or not it is AKC or something else I do not know. I really know nothing about that sort of stuff. Id have to ask her. like I said I wasn't concerned about that. I know she wouldn't lie to me. Like I said before, if they are mixed, then she dosn't know it either. |
im going to e-mail my friend and ask her if her parents are AKC registered. just for my own curiosity. |
