a question regarding puppy size Hey guys! Hope you're having a wonderful night :) So I am trying to get a puppy now, but I have a concern about puppy's size. I personally prefer chubby babies that are able to grow to 8 lbs or so :) (no super tiny ones!). I have been contacting different breeders, and there's one baby I just fell in love with immediately! :) But she will only grow to no more than 5 lbs.. I am wondering if those size puppies are less healthy and more likely to be sick? or they are just in a normal size range like we humans do. Thank you very much!!!! I think a 5 pound yorkie is perfect and within the standard. Adult weight is always a guessing game and this baby could end up below 5 pounds or over. If you've fallen in love with her, I say go for it! Good luck and welcome to YT! |
2 Attachment(s) I think you'll be surprised by how big 5lbs is, I know I was. Lola is about 5.5lbs in these pictures. For reference I'm 5'2 and the stuffed turkeys are a beanie baby and beanie buddy. I like her size, she's small but not as delicate as a tiny. |
I have a 5 pound female, a 4 1/2 pound male and a 3 1/2 pound male (he looks much smaller without his fluff). 5 -6 pounds is a good size. I didn't want tiny babies, but I didn't want "teapots" either. I'm happy with their sizes. We have pups that are charting 3 pounds (we're keeping the smallest), 2 of them are charting around 4 pounds and the larger girl is charting to be 5-5 1/2 pounds. Of course that can all change and there no guarantees, but they've stayed pretty much on the chart since they were born. They'll be 6 weeks Friday. |
If the breeder is guaranteeing that the pup won't grown more than 5 pounds, I doubt if I would trust her. Every breeder I've spoken to says you can't guarantee size. Sure, good breeders breed to standard, and that's "most not exceed 7 pounds," occasionally there are genetic anomalies and you just can't do anything about it. Most buyers do won't a pup in the 5 pound range, so I'm not surprised some breeders promise it. To answer you question, a 5 pound Yorkie, can be very healthy, once you get under 4 pounds, it gets riskier. |
A breeder can not be 100% sure the size the pup will be. If you want to make sure your getting a heathy pup you need to make sure the breeder does health and genetic testing and doesn't let the puppies leave there mom until 12 weeks. |
I can only encourage you to find a reputable breeder that has a history of producing healthy pups. Good references are important, make sure they are not internet advertized, health testing is a must. My girl is 5lbs and as healthy as a horse but there are dogs her size and larger that are not so healthy. It is all in the breeding. There are a lot of people out there breeding genetically defective Yorkies and other small breed dogs right now. Small dogs are kind of a fad so there are a lot of people hopping on the bandwagon to make a buck. Go to the breeders home and check out the facilities and the dogs that they are breeding. A good breeder will be glad to let you see their dogs and show you books full of their ancestors along with the health testing that has been done. If you are one to do a lot of walking or hiking or have a family with smaller kids a larger Yorkie may be the perfect pet for you. They need lots of exercise and activity. |

I have a new puppy. She is 9 weeks old. I got her when she was only a little over 7 weeks... Wondering now why the breeder let her go so early! I have fallen in love with her... She is precious. I want to put her pic on here, but I cannot figure out how to do it! She is teething and growls at her chew toys... I hope that does not mean that she will grow to be aggressive....Any ideas?? |

She is beautiful!! My Bella was supposed to be no more than 5lbs. Since my Stepdaughter is the breeder I knew the parents and grandparents. They were all right at 5 lbs. Bella is 13 months, 6.8 lbs and beautiful. |
