HELP! Gizmo is marking my bedroom only! Gizmo is marking in my bedroom, the only place in the house. My bedroom is off limits to him unless I am going in for something. His crate is in my bedroom so sleeps in there. I make sure he has gone to the bathroom before I go in my room with him and he will mark any way. This morning he did it TWICE right by where I was standing. I didn't see the second one until I was cleaning the first spot. I read that he should not have run of the house so my bedroom and kitchen are off limits. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated! |
Marking is different then going potty. If they smell another pet or odor they mark it (the room, spot, item etc) as their own......you can try a belly band you put it around his waist area with a pad in it........or watch him like a hawk and correct only when you catch him in the act. |
There is no other pet odor on the carpet. I moved in last year to a brand spanking new place. After he marked this morning I put him in his crate when I went back to my room to get dressed. Up until then he runs around between the bathroom and dining room while I'm getting ready in the bathroom. I hate the idea of a belly band so I guess I will just keep watching him or put him in his crate whenever I am in my room. Thank you for your reply. |
Dogs pee for a variety of reasons from fear, stress, anxiety, ultra respect/submission, a status statement, marking their territory, sometimes marking his territory in an attempt to protect you and himself, etc., in addition to full bladders. He's likely expressing his anxieties and relieving himself where your scent is largely concentrated and is most comforting to him or he's making a statement of some sort that is important to him. That's routinely why most dogs pee their owners beds or in their bedrooms or couches or on their shoes when they are frustrated and stressed or need to mark for an important reason. Telling us more about when and where he pees would be helpful. Is it when you are away or when you are getting ready to go to work or during the night or when? What is his life like - how does he spend his day all day and is he a calm/submissive, anxious, dominant or aggressive dog? Which of those would you say best describes him? |
Hi - He marks randomly. I was making the bed this morning, last night he was playing and stopped to mark. He is at the point now where he goes running to the bathroom mid-play when he has to go. He has done it different times of the day or night and not every day. During the day he is in the bathroom with his wee pads, his crate, his soft bed, his toys and food and water. The bathroom is big so he lots of room to play. I have a puppy cam on him doing the day and he is showing any signs of separation anxiety. He sleeps mainly in the morning, probably because we get up at 5. I play with him for 30 minutes before I have to start getting ready. He's with me until I leave playing with his toys. I was say he is mainly calm/submissive, but he can be aggressive at times. |
My personal guess is, you aren't letting him in there, so he feels like he needs to claim it for himself. Marking is different than urinating. Marking means expanding territory. He's trying to make your bedroom part of his territory. If I were you, I'd scrub down the carpet with Nature's Miracle, shampoo the carpet and air it out. Then let him in. If he's still marking, every time he sniffs around, and looks like he's about to mark, pick him up and take him to a pee pad. |
Tinkeysmommy - thank you for your reply. He was able to go into my bedroom all the time until I read on here that he should not have run of the whole place. I started blocking off the bedroom and the kitchen and he would always go into my bedroom when I went in there. I will try your recommendations and hope for the best. |
