Grinding Nails So my niece bought a nail grinder for dogs and I gave it a try. Magnus didn't like it so much but I think he just needs to get used to it. I'm starting out with tiny treats for each nail he lets me grind without a fuss. :D My biggest problem is the dewclaw. I'm having hard time b/c of the fur that's in the way. Tomorrow, I'm going to try and wet his fur down with water so I can see the claw better. For those that do this at home, can you share some of your experiences/tips? Also, which brand/model grinder do you use? |
I forget the brand of mine. I think it was the first one to come out. Try putting a sock over the foot then poke the nail through the fabric. |

I never succeeded with the grinder on my boys. We grind nails by walking on pavement. Yes, I cheat. :D Teddy was trained well for nail trimming, but Max was never happy about it. Thankfully, with the walking, I never have to do their nails. I can imagine that the dew claw is a challenge. |
One of my other dogs hated to have his nails clipped. We found he would accept the dremel much better than clipping. It is safer for people who are afraid of cutting the quick and it takes off the sharp points that are left by clipping. |
I'm so scared of getting the quick I'm nervous - a wreck actually - & that goes straight to Tibbe. If it weren't for his Gentle Paws (love its two speeds), I'd guess I'd have to have his nails clipped by the vet! I've clipped dogs nails all my life with my fosters plus my own dogs but once I got Tibbe and had him a year or so, I get so squeamish. But the Gentle Paws is so easy, Tibbe is fine with it after desensitizing him to it & I've never gotten a quick, hurt him or brought blood! Whoever came up with the idea of a small grinder for dogs' toenails created a godsend for someone like me! |
